chinatown is not laid out chronologically. so there are layers of chinatown's history. anyway, you stand anywhere you look and of course one of the difficult things is it's almost impossible to separate chinatown's history from the history of san francisco. and from the history of the united states. as an example while we're standing here. you can look up the block and you will see on the left hand side. there's a little alleyway and the name of that alley is brooklyn. some of you may remember the name of the ship that bore 200 mormons under samuel brannon to san francisco was called the brooklyn. we're standing in front of a church. there's a baptist church. it was rebuilt in 1908. now the reason why this is of interest is twofold. one there's a disproportionate number of christian churches in chinatown. the reason why is almost from its founding outside as we're absolutely obsessed with converting chinese to the christian religion? why i'm not always sure but suffice it to say many times. they literally had a church that was referred to as a mission as if they had gon
