first chinese-american. the best mayor in the whole world in my opinion, but now, he got elected by the people of the city as the first asian elected mayor. should we all give our wonderful mayor a 22-year experience in city government a big round of applause? [applause] as i said many times during the several events that i was involved, you can see the history continue to be made by our great mayor in the next four years, eight years, and beyond, believe me. our mayor has already shown his leadership ability to all of you. you know, what he has done -- i do not have to repeat what he has done. you have your own judgment, and he is a visionary mayor. he has done everything for us. not only chinese americans, but the city and every part that is involved. we're so grateful that the mayor, together with our president of the board of supervisors approved this program. we started talking about it maybe three weeks ago. can you imagine within the short time, three weeks, the department of public works, under the l

that is the same thing with literally every chinese family, every chinese-owned business, but also beyond that, i think this culture is spreading that a lot of non-asian families are doing the same thing. whether it is our friends at north beach or people here in chinatown. in talking with the merchants all over china town, chinese chamber, the stockton street merchants, the chinatown merchants association -- we wanted to capture a little bit more improvement this year on pedestrian safety. there was an idea that was created and talked about for several weeks where it began by a few years ago when i was public works director, that we expanded some of the sidewalks for the benefit of pedestrian safety. we worked very closely with the traffic division of mta. we worked with our health department. we worked with chinatown neighborhood groups and the businesses to expand those sidewalks, and it has actually become quite a positive thing. then, we had sunday streets this past year in the summer where we literally took over grant ave. that became a very positive thing. in fact, we started the f

like chinese. i would like go to china and have a job over there. >> reporter: the frenzy to learn chinese stems from economic ties between the two countries that continue to grow every year. there has been a steady increase in chinese imports since the china-pakistan free trade agreement. pakistan continues to welcome new chinese businesses. in may, one of china's largest banks opened two branchs in pakistan to boost investment in the country. as the two countries strengthen ties, more businessmen are trying to poll ish their chinese language skills. the president is trying to promote a government led program to teach chinese in schools. the president's home province of sindh announced in september that it planned to make chinese in schools from 2013. at present, the schools in sindh province must teach a total of four languages including urduh and english. if chinese is added students will have to study five languages at the same time. the province also has 5,000 public schools. securing enough c

and learn chinese? by the eighth grade, our students are able to read, write and speak fluently in cantonese and mandarin so well that they go to china on an exchange program with a sister school in beijing, can confidently bargain for goods, order in restaurantsing and live with a host family and communicate well. the district is proposing a significant change to the student composition without agreement from the community. we are outraged and object to a change which will negatively impact the success of our existing program. please help us understand why the district is imposing a program design change which will destroy a program which has been working so well. [applause] >> good evening, board members and district staff. i'm a member of the school's council and it is my opinion that changing to a 2/3 english learner ratio will have a significant negative effect on ethnic diversity. hispanic, african-american and caucasian will be fighting for the 1/3 supposedly english proficient group, an i say su

so the chinese become kind of the all great power war threat that's out there now if you were the chinese and you were to say that the president of the united states the defense secretary of the united states both came out publicly endorsing a brand new military strategy which as you mentioned partly is due to or they claim is because of certain budget cuts that might be coming in their direction but one that specifically says no more this nation building staff no more focusing on iraq and afghanistan it's all the asia pacific region now how would you react when you start building up the our military might. well i think they know they have been building up their military might i don't think it's out of the norm for a rising power in this age to make that kind of effort especially when it relies on raw materials and energy coming from regions distant from it shores it would be odd if the chinese weren't building up their military to a certain extent i think the irony here is you know we are concerned about being shut out of trade and east asia and we're trying to use this kind of military
