i am with the chinese workers' association. we have been serving the chinese community for 40 years now. i want to recognize there are many workers an audience today, and not everyone is share -- ready to share their story with you because the threat of retaliation is very real. we have allies with the progress of workers alliance. we were to end wage theft. we also work with workers to end wage theft in their workplace. just this past month at the chinese workers' association we have four cases in chinatown, one case from the senate of district. as you can see, it is happening throughout the city. >> most of the cases are currently in the restaurant industry. some include workers employers paying $250 per month for working six days a week. that is less than $4 an hour without any overtime calculation. there are cases where workers have not paid for many months. even though the progress of workers alliance and progress of agency have really good victories, waged that is still a huge issue in the community. the city can better us

association of chinese teachers? the alliance of black school educators? the latin american teachers association? the organization of filipino educators and employees. ok. what i would like to do is have students scholarships and awards announcements at this time. i will call each group one at a time. the first group is the united administrators of san francisco. this is the part of the year, once a year, when we have different organizations come before the board meeting and present their scholars. this is one of the few opportunities where we get to see our scholars gathered in one room for the evening. >> good evening. i am one of the executive directors of the united administrators of san francisco. this is the other executive director and all present. united administrators of san francisco gives 4 $2,000 scholarships to students who apply to us. they write an essay about why they want to be in the helping professions. we hope that they will be teachers or social workers or something that is going to help out people. we have a committee that reads the sc

the next group that is going to present their scholarships would be the association of chinese teachers. >> good evening. i am currently the interim assistant principal at galileo academy and scholarship committee member for the association of chinese teachers. this is danny, our president elect. the association of chinese teachers raised $24,000 this year. we are proud to award 12 students scholarships to further their pursuit in higher education. seven of them are here today. the first is nancy chen from washington. i am the executive director for the chinese association. we organized city-wide. we're based in chinatown. mostly service workers in the restaurant industry and getting more workers in the construction industry as well. i wanted to keep my comments focused. there is a false dichotomy being created that this is community versus labor. if we look at the room, we can see ithe most unity around cpmc and building it in the right way for all working families is the unity coming from labor and community coming together. that is a very important part. we see labor is community. health care is also jobs. health care is also services for our communities. the reason we're here today is because we really support the worker rights issues. to spell it out more clearly, we feel the only way to keep working families in san francisco is to preserve strong standards, strong labor standards for all working families. this includes people in really bad conditions in chinatown getting paid $5 an hour. it also includes for us to be able to ensure there are good jobs for people to be abl

as a student, vincent's killing got me involved with organizations like the chinese progressive association, the asian law caucus, and many groups that were involved. community organizing, localizing to make change in the communities really inspired me. reverend fong and many others, gene kwan, many inspired me to get involved. the members of the san francisco bay area community that united in being inspired by american citizens for justice that helen formed in detroit with many groups, and multi-racial coalition, but in the bay area, they helped to found asian- americans for justice, along with many groups like the asian law caucus, chinese american citizens alliance, a chinese for affirmative action, the japanese american citizens league, the chinese consolidated benevolent association, and many others to raise awareness. the resolution we will hear in a moment will declare june 23 as the 30th anniversary of the death of vincent chin and as -- acknowledge the work being done by many in the community. i wanted to say that norman was a key player in building these kinds of alliances and mak
