before her appointment she served as legislative aide to supervisor chiu.ay you'll get to know her and the issues facing the city. welcome, supervisor. thank you for join using us. >> thank you for having me. >> let's start with a little about your background. where you grew up, went to school and what kind of jobs you had in the past. >> sure, i grew up in the sunset district. still live there. spent about 20 years living in the sunset district and just am so proud to be able to represent the district that i grew up in and where my parents still live. i had gone through the public education system and went to neighborhood schools throughout the sunset district. so, had gone to francis scott key elementary school, hoover middle school, lowell high school and am just so proud to be able to come back full circle to support a lot of those schools that i went to and be part of that community in a very integral way. >> so, you spent most of your life in san francisco. why did you choose to live in the city? >> well, first of all, my parents decided to move us to

by the planning department and the small business commission i want to thank our assemblyman david chiu for his work on this legislation before he left to go to sacramento generally for existing businesses this legislation will not change the controls but for locations that closed down for 6 months between attendants the signs for that business including the awnings when the something like that, etc. need to be you i didn't want to be in conformity with the controls that helps to insure that awning are clean and safe and our corridors are not clustered and windows to the street are not unnecessarily obtaining occurred this makes sure the billboard companies are not mass raiding as signs there were billboard companies one in particular that were exploiting a will that in the planning code to say they were a business sign but really be a billboard the voters amazing over and over again not to allow new blldz in san francisco we were able to close that billboard through the interim controls we're making permanence i want to offer one amendment to this piece of legislation made by the plann

in 2009, president david chiu and a number of us supported our language access ordinance. oakland followed suite soon and i think our city. because of the chinese language action and many of the language networks and many of our colleagues at the network which i totally support, and the bilingual and multi lingual city is a value to everyone, not just to english learners but to the whole city. i wanted to also acknowledge that one half of san francisco residents speak a language other than english at home. i think more of our departments need to really see language access as a priority. when we held hearings in 2009 with president chiu, we found that the tiers of the language access ordinance didn't really make sense. so i'm really glad that this is pulling everyone up to quality and standards so that we have language access more strongly supported throughout all the departments in the city. i'm very proud that my three member staff can speak cantonese, spanish, french, chinese and many other languages as well. but i'm hoping that as we look at our city's departments and s

nate mildly who pushed the first safe drug ordinance and i want to thank my predecessor and david chiu for carrying the legislation and to erik mar, i also want to thank my legislative aide conner johnson for his hard work on this legislation as well. my office and i have had numerous meetings with stakeholders over the last few months and we have added some important amendments as a result of the conversations. we have further clarified that retailers are not obligated to participate in collecting -- collection programs though we obviously will encourage them to do so and some seem very interested in participating. we have refined the definition of manufacturers, wholesalers and copackers to make it clear that extended producer responsibility refers to the producer, the party that actually originally created the drug. we expanded the programs availability to non englanderish -- english supporters. so we added a requirement for all city operated pharmacies to par tas -- participate in the take back program. i don't know if i worked an issue with an impressive coalition of supporters th

that's why when i had a many many chats with david chiu before he successfully left his position to kind of understand what he had gone through as a supervisor for this district, it's no less important that every other district in san francisco. i say to you with great gratitude to the members of the board because i know that for the last 30 days i spent some great time here and i kind of put myself a little bit in what a supervisor would do on a daily basis. i was down there at lombard street on the backside making sure that cliff wasn't going to be following when we got those heavy rains. i reordered myself for what i did many years ago i'm just walking the streets as i had copied with different people of different interests. to talk about what this district needed. and quickly came to the conclusion, after so much great input by people, that they wanted someone who recognized the strength of this diverse community in this gesture. was willing to spend hours understanding the issues, glistening before acting, but then acting to make sure things got done. and when whether it was pothole

it shows officer raymond chiu waking up bernard warren. a homeless man who fell asleep on a muni bus. the officer tries to get warren off the train. at one point pushing him. later hitting him with a baton and then using pepper spray. police chief greg suhr says, his officer did nothing wrong. and had to take action because warren was not complying. and made several threats. and chief suhr adds, a judge has already found enough evidence to put warren on trial in the case. we hear from the local dog owner. taking on one of the nations largest dog food companies. saying their product is hazardous to pets. >> pam: attorneys behind a class action lawsuit against purina dog food say, they are receiving hundreds of calls from people saying their dogs have also become ill from the dog food. the bay area man who is the main plaintiff in the case says, his bull dog died. and two of his other dogs were sickened after eating beneful by purina. the attorneys estimate they have received more than one- thousand calls in the last few days. the lawsuit cl

i didn't start off pushing for this legislation, but when assembly member chiu was leaving the board, and he had a couple of things about unfinished business he wanted to -- the only thing i was interested in taking hold is this in particular especially from our own personal experience of taking the wrong medication and making mistakes and it's not necessarily the pharmaceutical company's fault in that regard, but i think it would be nice to have a place to make it easy for me to dispose of unused prescription and non prescription medications and what's so interesting about is this is -- one of the pharmacies in my district, charlie, he thought the program was going away and he was definitely really concerned about that because he's, like, i have customers come from everywhere and i develop new customers an -- customers as a result because i have this drop location and a lot seniors utilize this so much. we have several pick ups more than we anticipated. i think there's a strong desire and i'm looking farld to the implementation and with that, i would like to move forward the legislat

supervisor, assembly member chiu took the lead on that and when he left, he put it in the phenomenally able hands of a true environmental health champion in president breed. we know enough to know it works. we know enough that -- we know it's right because we know it works. the number shows it work. we have a system that's great and we know the time is right because legal challenges have larger or overcome. alameda county stepped out ahead. they got sued. the ninth circuit court of appeals ruled in favor of alameda county. it's very clear that cities have the right, cities and counties have the right to protect their residents and to do so by requiring the companies who sell products into their borders help the county do so. that is what the judges rule. the dea, the drug enforcement agency also heard the call from physicians and law enforcement that they needed to make it clearer and easier for pharmacies to take back control substances. so they adopted those rules. those rules are very recent. we'll be working with the dea to clarify them and we'll be working actively with pharmacies
