by the planning department and the small business commission i want to thank our assemblyman david chiu for his work on this legislation before he left to go to sacramento generally for existing businesses this legislation will not change the controls but for locations that closed down for 6 months between attendants the signs for that business including the awnings when the something like that, etc. need to be you i didn't want to be in conformity with the controls that helps to insure that awning are clean and safe and our corridors are not clustered and windows to the street are not unnecessarily obtaining occurred this makes sure the billboard companies are not mass raiding as signs there were billboard companies one in particular that were exploiting a will that in the planning code to say they were a business sign but really be a billboard the voters amazing over and over again not to allow new blldz in san francisco we were able to close that billboard through the interim controls we're making permanence i want to offer one amendment to this piece of legislation made by the plann

in 2009, president david chiu and a number of us supported our language access ordinance. oakland followed suite soon and i think our city. because of the chinese language action and many of the language networks and many of our colleagues at the network which i totally support, and the bilingual and multi lingual city is a value to everyone, not just to english learners but to the whole city. i wanted to also acknowledge that one half of san francisco residents speak a language other than english at home. i think more of our departments need to really see language access as a priority. when we held hearings in 2009 with president chiu, we found that the tiers of the language access ordinance didn't really make sense. so i'm really glad that this is pulling everyone up to quality and standards so that we have language access more strongly supported throughout all the departments in the city. i'm very proud that my three member staff can speak cantonese, spanish, french, chinese and many other languages as well. but i'm hoping that as we look at our city's departments and s

that's why when i had a many many chats with david chiu before he successfully left his position to kind of understand what he had gone through as a supervisor for this district, it's no less important that every other district in san francisco. i say to you with great gratitude to the members of the board because i know that for the last 30 days i spent some great time here and i kind of put myself a little bit in what a supervisor would do on a daily basis. i was down there at lombard street on the backside making sure that cliff wasn't going to be following when we got those heavy rains. i reordered myself for what i did many years ago i'm just walking the streets as i had copied with different people of different interests. to talk about what this district needed. and quickly came to the conclusion, after so much great input by people, that they wanted someone who recognized the strength of this diverse community in this gesture. was willing to spend hours understanding the issues, glistening before acting, but then acting to make sure things got done. and when whether it was pothole

i didn't start off pushing for this legislation, but when assembly member chiu was leaving the board, and he had a couple of things about unfinished business he wanted to -- the only thing i was interested in taking hold is this in particular especially from our own personal experience of taking the wrong medication and making mistakes and it's not necessarily the pharmaceutical company's fault in that regard, but i think it would be nice to have a place to make it easy for me to dispose of unused prescription and non prescription medications and what's so interesting about is this is -- one of the pharmacies in my district, charlie, he thought the program was going away and he was definitely really concerned about that because he's, like, i have customers come from everywhere and i develop new customers an -- customers as a result because i have this drop location and a lot seniors utilize this so much. we have several pick ups more than we anticipated. i think there's a strong desire and i'm looking farld to the implementation and with that, i would like to move forward the legislat
