joining me now is nbc news entertainment correspondent chloe melas.zed? >> that's the million dollars question. a lot of people think it is because they had so much money and property between the two of them, but really it came down to the children, the six children that they share together and the dispute over custody. all of their children are over the age of 18 minus their twins, knox and vivienne, who are 16 years old. at one point they had a private judge that granted them 50/50 custody and then that decision was eventually turned over by the california appellate court. that is really what has dragged this all out. we don't know the details of the settlement, but i do want to read you a little bit about what angelina jolie said in her statement to nbc news. more than eight years ago angelina filed for divorce from mr. pitt. she and the children left all of the properties they had shared with mr. pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. frankly, angelina is exhausted but she is relieved this one part
