we see the landslides in chongqing. at least eight have been killed in this latest situation with 24 others missing. the missing includes 11 coal miners. about 500 rescue workers have evacuated more than 7,000 residents. the economic loss is said to be $11 million in just that county alone. surrounding areas have been hit by massive flooding, landslides, and traffic disruptions. so yes, the weather situation has really led to some very devastating flooding effects in southern china. now as we look at the forecast, the forcing mechanism for those downpours has now shifted toward the east and so by wednesday i think we're going to see a little bit of a loosening in terms of the amount of rainfall, which is what is desperately needed. that doesn't mean you won't see some showers. but at least the downpours, i think that focal point will shift toward the east. and so the korean peninsula and western japan, this is going to be the next area of precipitation. you can see here as we go into wednesday, rainfall expected for nor

and then the southwest monsoon brings scattered showers into bangkok and heavier rainfalls into chongqing. now, there's also a hurricane to talk about in baja, california. this system has already moved onshore and it's going to be a big problemmaker. i want to show you this particular imagery because you can see the clearly defined eye. it was a category four storm on sunday, transitioning into monday, making landfall that resist tense is weakening the system, but winds at 185 kilometers per hour and this storm will slowly move toward the north and west. and that's going to be a problem, because it's dumping a lot of rain in the process. some areas might see anywhere from 300 to 400 millimeters of rain possible at times, with general amounts anywhere from 150 to 200 mill meters. and we are talking about some very strong winds in the process. meanwhile, very chilly temperatures with high pressure located in the upper midwest. that's driving down lows into the low freezing areas. some a areas may barely even get to the freezing mark for daytime highs because of the cold air pulling in. mean

a cold front is moving through china, and that's bringing some rain into beijing, chongqing and hong kong coming up on wednesday. let's take a look at the forecast for europe. high pressure dominating the eastern half of the continent but we have a low pressure system and a trough of little area where moisture is moving from the south, and because of that, there were some flooding problems, specifically in southern france, and we're looking at the possibility of some severe weather for eastern spain and southern france, again, because that trough is still lingering. along with the fact that the tropics sent into portions of germany and central europe you will also see a chance for some rain. so berlin, 20 coming up for tuesday. 23 in paris. and in sunnier conditions for warsaw and vienna, as we go through the next day. here's a look at the forecast for north america. we are starting to see some clearing in the carolinas but we have a stationary front bringing rain down towards florida and we have this low pressure system causing some problems. we had reports of 135 kilometers per hou

i'm told dia and cia were predicting chongqing would come out. and when eastern diplomats confirmed my interpretation, all of a sudden the government decided my knowledge of the enemy was more value blg than my value as an expert infantryman. so my jobs in vietnam both tours i was assigned to work in the north vietnam affairs commission of the embassy in what was called special projects office. in that capacity i traveled throughout the country in my five times in vietnam i was in 42 out of 44 provinces plus laos and cambodia. i was in and out of vietnam from 1968 until the final evacuation in 1975 when i was involved in trying to help get orphans out and also trying without success to get into cambodia to bring orphans out of cambodia. after my second vietnam tour i left the army and became a fellow at the hoover institution on war revolution and peace at stanford where i wrote the first major english language history of vietnamese communism. again, i think -- i went back and re-read it a few years ago and there may be a few paragraphs i would c
