the owner's name is chor ing. they live in this replenish aston neighborhood. they're overwhelmed, tired, and just trying to make sense of what happened last night into the morning. they didn't want to make any comments on camera but they did issue us a statement. the family says, "i'm sorry but we do not have any comment. we are also trying to figure out what's going on, just like everybody else. we're sorry to hear about the trend. our condolences go out to those injured and those who lost their lives." they say right now they're very concerned about making any statements on the record. nbc bay area has been reporting all day, oakland city officials say they know about this warehouse, it's a problem warehouse. listen to what city councilman noel gallo had to say. >> it's an activity that has not been permitted. there is no fire inspections that have been provided to this building, not only on this part, that part, especially his. all these apartments are illegally here. they're not permitted by either the fire department, the building inspectors. >> reporter:

party actually took place overnight, we learned it's actually owned by a trust that was settle up by chor ing, who owns a dozen other buildings in the bay area, several have been investigated for minor violations but not received as many complaints as this warehouse according to government records we obtained. we discovered the venue for last night's dance party was already under investigation by the city of oakland over potential structural problems. now, our investigative unit discovered the warehouse has actually been accused of a long list of violations over the years. today the city launched yet another investigation into the warehouse that accuses the facility of having a makeshift, one-way stairwell built out of wooden pallets. as we've heard, relatives of the building's owner adamantly deny that kind of shoddy work. but today firefighters repeatedly blamed that narrow stairwell for trapping some of the victims inside the fire. it was only less than a month ago when oakland's planning and building department launched an earlier investigation into the very same property, also citing

we spoke with the daughter and son-in-law of chor ng, the property owner. in a statement on her behalf, the daughter said, i'm sorry, but we do not have any comment. we are also trying to figure out what's going on, like everyone else. we're so sorry to hear about the tragedy. our condolences go out to the family and friends of those injured and those who loths their lives. in addition to the warehouse ng is linked to 17 properties in the bay area either individually or through a trust. according to property records, one of those prorperties is an apartment building on lombard street in san francisco. records show last year inspectors found two violations of that property, both involved cracked walls and loose ceilings and they were later corrected. the city of oakland though has received four complaints on another prouperty owned by ng. three of the complaints involved graffiti, the other had to do with sewer waste leaking from the property. none of the buildings received as many complaints as the warehouse in oakland. that's on the 1300 block. nearly ten
