chp is on the scene of a deadly accident. we are live on the scene on stone valley road which has been shut down. >> reporter: that's right. a lot of activity over the last several minutes here. take a look behind me. you can see chp in the middle of the roadway there as they try to piece together what happened. this is stone valley road near round hill drive. it has been shut down since about 2:00 this morning after this single car accident left one man dead. let me tell you what chp told me what happened. they say this man in his 20s who lives a short distance from here was driving down the road, just after 2:00 this morning, he apparently lost control. we don't know why. they say speed may have been a factor. he hit a guide pole that's on the side of the road. hit that, went to the other side, flipped over and he was killed. they believe at this point that people driving in the area saw what happened after the fact and called 911 after they saw the accident. they came out here and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

chp's lead agency handling this care. this is what happened. the car lost control, crashed into the fire hydrant. the aftermath shooting from the hydrant at union and van ness. we are also told the car hit a muni bus before it crashed. no word on any injuries. by the time officers got here, the suspect or suspects had already taken off. they could be hurt, though, judging from the damage done to the car. the air bags deployed, the whole bit. this all started. this chase started at 3:05 this morning, less than two miles away at mission and south van ness. chp tells me officers ran the place, quickly learned the car had been car jacked out of modesto. officers are in touch with the police. officers lost sight of the car a few minutes into the chase and found it crashed into this fire hydrant a minute later. the suspect is still on the run. i asked the chp officer why they ended up running the plates in the first place. he could not give me an answer. i'm waiting to get that information for you this morning. i can tell you the scene is clear at un
