we did receive an update from the chp.oroner has removed the badly burned bodies by those involved in the crash. investigators are still taking measurements and gathering evidence. then it will take them some time to tow the bus away. the chp is estimating thattics -- that i-5 will not be open until later on. they have been working through the night to identify those who were killed. the horrific tragedy unfolded just after 5:30 last night when a southbound fed extruck crossed the grassy median on interstate 5 and slammed into the bus head on. we know the drivers of the truck and bus died. witnesses say the impacts sounded like a series of explosions. we know the gwen county sheriffs office will hold a press conference later on this morning around 10:00. live in orland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. for >>> time is 6:34. some of the students who survived had to kick out a window on the bus to escape. alex savidge is in our newsroom right now with more details about high school students with were planning their coll

"today in the bay" sam bronchtraveled to orland overnight and you just got an update from the chp. >> it's hard to conceptionalize what is more jarring, the skeletal remains of the bus behind me or just to get out to the scene i was stepping over triage, oxygen masks and torn clothing. so many people injured in that serious, traumatic accident. you're looking at what it appeared like earlier this afternoon, 5:40 when it first happened. the latest news is that there is a tenth confirmed futatality fr this crash. at this point we know that 35 people, according to chp, have been transported to local medical centers on top of the ten folks who have died. we asked them today, have all the family members been notified yet? we were told no. of course, that has to do with the fact that there are folks coming from southern california and families all over the state and chp and authorities have not yet effectively reached everybody involved. they don't know necessarily the status of their loved one and they don't know what caused this accident. which could be an equally perplexing problem for m

a cal trans engineer and a chp accident investigation team are headed to the scene to try to recreate the conditions leading up to last thursday's crash between a fedex bus and a tour bus. 10 people were killed including five high school students on their way to tour humboldt state university. the chp will use vehicles similar to the ones in the crash to analyze speed, braking. >>> a major san jose intersection is back open this morning, this afternoon i should say after a car crash that left one man on life support. san jose police say the driver of a honda crv may have red a run light on coleman avenue just after midnight. officers say the driver of a black chevy suburban was going northbound when he was hit by the car traveling eastbound. both individuals were taken to the hospital where the driver of that was hit has life-threatening injuries. the other driver is in serious but stable condition. >> our traffic investigations unit will canvass and look for witnesses. if there are any witnesses they will take statements from them. right now we know they're the only two vehicles invo

chp officers just updated their investigation a short time ago. they are going over safety records, doing mechanical checks as they try to figure out what led to this deadly crash last night. authorities now say five of the ten victims were students from l.a. area high schools. that charter bus was taken the teens on a college visit. >>> investigators gathered evidence throughout the night at the scene of this deadly crash along i-5 near chico. late this morning, the charred wreckage of the bus and tractor- trailer were removed from the roadway. and in a morning news conference, chp investigators said there are trying to figure out why the driver of the fed- ex truck lost control on the freeway yesterday and slammed head on into this charter bus that was filled with high school students. >> we don't know whether the fed-ex driver had fallen asleep, whether he experienced a mechanical failure with his vehicle or whether there was a separate collision on the southbound side that caused him to lose control. we'll be looking into determining how exact
