we saw the chp unit with front end damage on the back of a tow truck. we believe the suspect may have hit that unit and that is what prompted a deputy to open fire. we understand this started at 8:00 last night when officers got a call to come out on reports of multiple people being assaulted. when they arrived, two people needed hospital treatment and they found the suspect in a stolen car down the road on in pelican loop. they say an assault led up to that deputy opening fire. >> this is a nice area and if it was a domestic issue of some sort, this is a low crime area. >> reporter: we saw investigators searching a grassy cliffside just south of pelican loop right along the coast. it is not clear what they were searching for. we do know that they called in police to help investigate this officer involved shooting. the circumstances that led up to the assault and shooting are unclear and condition of the suspect and victim are unknown at this time. more information will be released later today. ktvu fox2 news. >>> a holiday celebration that got out of h

what do chp officers have to say? >> reporter: they say this is a fatal crash and it was something that was possibly unavoidable at this point. and sadly the motorcyclist did pass away. i will say in the last four minutes, the five lanes of 880 have just reopened i want to say maybe 8:50 am. the motorcyclist turned away and been dealing started to reopen. if you're heading southbound on interstate 880 through heyward now the five lanes are open but the backup has extended. take a look at the pictures we were able to capture as we got on scene about 8:45 am. we can see the motorcycle down the road right before it was being towed. chp said this started around 6:20 am. the motorcyclist was lane splitting between lanes when and 2. and somehow began lane splitting between lanes two and three when the motorcyclist crashed into the back of a pickup truck and then flew off the bike. >> the motorcyclist was putting lanes and number one in two lanes. and he started to split lanes number 2:3 lanes. that's when he collided into t
