this is tony pacheco, a seven-year veteran of the chp. he is expected to survive. the shooting happened about 6.30, last night on the eastbound side of interstate 8 right below the 8, 0, 5, the chp says officer pacheco responded to a solo vehicle crash. you see the scene here. he shows up. he finds the driver that was involved in that crash. standing in the center median in front of his car. chp says when the officer got near the driver, the driver suddenly attacked the officer and tried to grab his gun. the 2 got into a fight during which the gun went off and hit the officer in the leg. today officials praised witnesses who stepped in to help the officer after he was shot. that that was huge for us because likes it. tony was severely injured. he's a seven-year veteran, keeps himself in tremendous shape, physically and mentally. >> and we have some of the best training. i just commend the public who was driving through that area yesterday felt compelled to stop and help one of my i'm forever grateful and those families as well. >> hats off to those good samaritans
