joan first. >> i agree, chris. i think that the president went out of his way to get a deal with the republicans, put a lot of thing on the table as a liberal democrat i wasn't happy with that but rooting for him to get a deal and he didn't. and i think that his, i'm the best compromise or i'm the reasonable man, routine, it's not a routine. it's who he is. that is wearing a little bit thin, and i think we really need to see him begin to articulate a democratic party vision of how to get this country moving again. until he does, we may continue to see slippage. there is something wrong with what just happened in the last two weeks and everyone agrees on that point. he needs to articulate what's going to make it better besides cutting the deficit more than the other side. >> needs to be tougher than the other side or a lot smarter, more clever. he didn't show either in his last go-round. >> he really didn't. progressive, many progressives understand the country is in a place now where we need a transformative leader

chris?s so much, maria. >>> "sesame street" responding to that online campaign to allow its popular characters bert and ernie to get married. we'll have that when we go down to the wire in 20. >>> what a week on wall street, stocks are up in the early going today and what's been an historic week of ups and downs and ups and downs for the dow, here are the numbers now. cnbc's mandy drury is here with what's moving your money. last four days have been unprecedented. >> absolutely, chris. we clocked up a fourth day of massive moves and i know that your great producers have got a graphic that shows it all. we can safely say this has been wall street's most volatile week since 2008 which was a year we'd rather forget in terms of the markets. for today the jury is still out but so far so good. we saw the nasdaq briefly turn negative after the consumer sentiment dropped in august, and gave the u.s. dollar a bit of a lift. if you listen to the responses from economists about this number, they say ok

i'm chris jansing.s dangerously teetering on the edge of recession are freaking out the markets again. take a look. stocks down once more this morning after the dow plunged nearly 400 points or rather 4% yesterday on a slew of gloomy reports on the economy. i'm joined now by cnbc's senior analyst ron insana. good morning. >> good morning, chris. >> where are we right now? investors are so spooked by any bad news or bad feeling that it sparks a sell-off? >> yeah. well, you know, we had a rough night against in asia and europe. something like -- something akin to a lehman like moment in europe where there are worries about the health of the banks and that is spreading to the u.s. we have opened lower, down 100 points at the worst and 105 points and rallied back a little bit. technology turning positive. we're going to have to see if we can get a turn around friday out of all this, but that remains to be seen. >> i know there's a technical sort of definition for recession. but if you talk to the average am

>> very tough, chris. that's exactly what it is, and i think the american people are tired of hearing she said she said, it's your fault, no it's your fault. people want to see leadership and the country come together. and recognize that these are real issues. we've got real problems on the economic and global stage, growth happening outside the united states. this is a real issue. corporations in the u.s. generating much of their growth as result of growth in china, growth in brazil, growth in india. i think -- i don't want to be all gloom and doom. one part of this story is positive. the fact is, that the corporate sector is sitting on $2.5 trillion in cash, balance sheets are very strong post-2008, because they are lean and mean. they've cut jobs, they've cut r & d spending, and you are looking at a strong sector in terms of the corporate sector. that in and of itself is positive. the issue is, they're sitting on that money. they're not putting that money to work, because they do not have the certainty.

>> reporter: hi, chris.rom israeli military radio claim as gun battle between an unnamed militant group and the idf may still be going on and then that other unconfirmed report of a fourth attack. here's hats coming from the idf. about mid-day today on a desert road between beersheba, in southern israel, at least three gunmen jumped out of a car and fired at a passenger bus. there were civilians and soldiers onboard that bus. that turned quickly into a firefight. shortly after that, another gunman fired at what is described as an anti-tank rocket at a passenger car. this was in the same general vicinity and at the same time an israeli military patrol perhaps approaching was hit by an ied. a complex and coordinated attack suggesteding militants. ambulance services are reporting at least six killed including soldiers and civilians and about a dozen wounded. violence, chris, in this area of north sinai is relatively rare, just on the other side of the border with israel, but it has been on the rise of late. you
