[laughter] the level of activity has everything to do with the straw poll which comes up on the second saturday of august. it's traditionally an early indicator of which organization, which campaign organization really has the muscle to be able to move people in a caucus-like way that they're going to have to do coming up in february. ron paul's name you probably should watch out for. some of the other iowa campaigns note that paul has been very active but off of the radar. and while most candidates and campaigns try to dumb down expectations saying, oh, we won't do that, well, so that they can exceed expectations, apparently ron paul hasn't gotten that memo. have a listen. >> i wished i could say that i am the front runner, and nobody's ahead of me, and it's a shoo-in. but the truth is that we can do it and will do very, very well and, hopefully, come in first. >> r

chris, good morning to you. good morning, everyone at home. more revelations this morning in britain's phone hacking scandal. former prime minister gordon brown hired criminals to obtain information that brown's infant son had cystic fibrosis. brown also accused "the sunday times" of hacking into his bank and tax records. both papers are owned by rupert murdoch. now a member of parliament wants murdoch and one of his top executives rebecca brooks to answer questions about that scandal. >>> debt reduction talks resume for a third straight day this afternoon at the white house. so far the talks remain deadlocked with the two sides far apart on taxes and spending. this morning, congressman paul ryan told erica the u.s. businesses are already trailing foreign competitors. >> we are already taxing our job creators and our businesses more than our foreign competitors are taxing theirs. we don't want to go farther down that path. we want to make sure that america's job producers, our employers, are not put at a huge competitive disadvantage. >> president obama said he'd reject any stopgap short-term measure. he's proposing a long-term debt reduction
