i'm chris chmura. marcus and laura are starting their weekend a little early. >>> arson investigators are on scene at a san jose campus that two schools share. it follows what was already a busy overnight. san jose firefighters responded to a series of fires just a few miles apart. all of them. kris sanchez is live on that campus. kris, go ahead. >> reporter: hi there, chris. that fire damaged the administration building. it took out the wifi for the entire campus and when the principal got the call this morning she knew it was just one more thing in what is already a very challenging year. i want to show you where this happened. this was just before sunrise this morning. they found that fire outside cornerstone academy that spread into the administration building. the campus is shared by cornerstone and kennedy elementary school in the franklin mckinley school district. also a person on the scene who tried to keep those firefighters from doing their jobs and the damage will impact learning as well. >>

i'm chris chmura. marcus and laura are starting their weekend a tad early.'s get to bob redell in alamo. he's been at the scene all morning. will customers get their water service restored? >> reporter: they will at some point, but it could be several hours. the initial estimate was 8 to 12 hours but that was before the water was shut off. that water was shut off about just over an hour ago and it was coming out of this new sinkhole here on hemme heavy near danville boulevard in alamo. you can see what is left is the part of the street has sunken in because there was so much erosion underneath from this water that was gushing since just before 12:40 this morning. this is the view from nbc bay area skyranger looking down on hemme avenue. eight-inch water line broke. it looked like a hot cauldron of boiling water as it gushed from underneath the street. it was like that for about nine hours until just before 10:00 this morning. east bay mud, which owns the lines, had trouble identifying which valves to shut off. one was difficult to access because it was under

you see the before and now you see the after, snapped by our own chris chmura. pretty glaring to see that there. a mess in millbrae. look at this. this is last night near the bart station. so many locations across the bay area looking like this. and here is what it looked like today. well, cars splashing right through our camera. cars still stuck in the standing water and having to be towed out. at this hour, the water is still being cleaned up. let's bring in nbc bay area's marianne favro. how bad was it last night, because you were also there, and what are you seeing right now? >> it was really bad out here. we saw standing water as high as 5 inches. and for cars that decided to race through the flooded areas, it did not turn out well. many of them hydroplaned or they stalled. if you look over here, you can see one car that tried to go through the flooding. now right now across the way on millbrae avenue, here in millbrae, you can see that they brought in special trucks. what these trucks are doing is sucking out the excess water to clear the flood zones. the
