chris christie is having a hard time right now. right before the holiday break, new jersey governor chris christie tried to get the state legislature to pass a new law that would allow him to personally profit from a book deal while he is still in office. amid public outcry, they said no. he also tried to get them to pass a bill that was apparently designed to bankrupt newspapers all over the state of new jersey. again, amid more public outcry they said no. when there is a public outcry about any politics in new jersey these days, it's generally against that state's wildly disliked governor. it was a particularly bad batch for him last month when he got not just his usual terrible local press, he got a nice big round of terrible national press because his approval ratings went so low he not only became the most-disliked governor in the country, he became the most-disliked governor in any state in 20 years. in any state. in 20 years. and just think about the year he's had. this is where his road to the white house was going to start

that's pretty strong words from chris christie involving such a sensitive issue for the new president does he really think about it, wolf? look, this is -- this is the man who was in charge of the transition, if you recall, until he got fired and just summarily dismissed from the transition. he did not get a place in the administration. i think, however, his criticism, if you want to set that aside because a lot of people in the administration will say that, you know, this is sour grapes from chris christie who didn't get a job he wanted and was fired. if you look at his criticism, it comes from somebody who was very familiar with how government is supposed to work because he got very immeshed in the details of government when he was trying to figure out the transition. and what he's really saying here is that something went wrong. what he is saying is the people inside the white house don't really have a full appreciation for how the government is supposed to work. and that, perhaps, is what chris christie thinks he could have helped him with. >> evan, evan perez is with us as well.

chris christie's got a new best plan ever. [ laughter ] in fact nbc news reported the trump transitionundergoing a quote, "stalinesque purge from the transition of people close to christie." you can just imagine trump's response to being called stalinesque. "it's true. i am kind of like a stallion." [ laughter ] "beautiful golden mane." [ laughter ] and that actually underscores a potentially troubling precedent that seems to be taking shape in the trump transition. trump needs to fill thousands of posts in the executive branch and he needs competent, experienced people arod him. but instead, he seems to be firing or rejecting people based purely on loyalty. veteran g.o.p. national security expert named elliott cohen recommended to other anti-trump republicans that they serve in the trump administration for the good of the country. but after talking to the trump transition team, cohen changed his mind saying, quote, "they're angry, arrogant, screaming, you lost. will be ugly. it became clear to me that they view jobs as lollipops, things you give out to good boys and girls." lollipops.

i don't think we can count chris christie out. most of this, what we're hearing as far as not being appointed to the trump administration has to do with the fact that the hearings haven't been done yet. i think once all those things clear up, i suspect that he's probably still close to the trump administration. trump just doesn't need the kind of attention that christie's bringing at the moment. >> i heard they may have offered him some smaller jobs, and christie said no. >> i think that's pretty accurate. i think bridgegate has legs, though. >> yeah. >> this type of stuff is still out there. there's a lot of political play with it, it doesn't go away. >> there's gonna be a new u.s. attorney in new jersey, as well. >> should be republican. >> that's true, and the u.s. attorney that pursued bridgegate, tried the case, got those convictions, will no longer be in that chair. it remains to be seen who trump will select to run that office. >> okay, let's talk about delaware, dover, its own spending revenue woes. an advisory council est
