chris cook reporting. david lammy is the labour mp for tottenham.a, in the fire at grenfell. he claimed at the weekend that the published estimate of 79 deaths in the fire is "far, far too low", and that a failure to provide updates of the true number that died is feeding suspicion of a cover up among survivors and local residents. i asked him earlier if he himself believed the authorities were witholding information. the 79 figure, which has now stood for a week, does not accord with those who lived down there and say but the survivors... there's a gap. they know there's a gap. in one flat alone, people say there were up to a0 people gathering because they gathered in the flat. it was ramadan. there are lists you can use, dwp lists for those on benefits. there is a local school. for the local authority, you can assess how many kids have showed up for school or not showed up for school. you can use mobile phones. you can speak to the mobile phone company. they will assist. i saw this during the riots. who's been on their phone at 12 o'clock before t

chris cook looks now at the possible part the building's cladding may have played in the fire's spreadt questions to answer quickly is, how many other buildings are at risk from fires of the sort that devastated the grenfell tower. right now, that's a very hard question to answer. to really understand the tragedy that unfolded this week in kensington, it may help to appreciate a success story from camden. back in 2012, there was a major fire on the 17th floor of the building behind me. a pensioner‘s flat was completely destroyed. but the fire didn't spread. it was contained by the walls and floors and the external features of the building. so the fire brigade were able to get here and stop it from getting into any other flats. a personal tragedy was prevented from becoming a much bigger disaster. one explanation for why the fire spread so quickly in the grenfell tower was that the fire appears to have spread over the outside of the building via the cladding. that's insulation added to the exterior of the building during a refurbishment in 2015. this broad design of cladding is in wide

newsnight‘s chris cook reports. 0h oh my god, they are screaming.stand the scale of the disaster beginning in the early hours of this morning? what went wrong and could it happen ain? went wrong and could it happen again? first, it is worth noting buildings like these are made to contain fires. the idea is if a fire brea ks contain fires. the idea is if a fire breaks out, the fire brigade can combat it before it spreads. that is why they have a stay put policy. people are supposed to stay in their flats until the fire is dealt with. in this case, it seems the strategy in place has led to people being in the building as smoke and flames penetrated right the way through the property. the normal strategy there is, especially in a tall building, some people may be less able than others to be able to escape down staircases through 2a storeys. stay put is a recognised strategy for people who cannot do that. the issue is that the fire did not stay contained. is raced through the building. —— it. that system broke down. the critical question is why? the bri

chris cook is with me. remind us how many buildings can have the wrong cladding on?ssues its own building regulations with guidelines. those guidelines say if you are going to put something on the outside of a building, a tall building, it has to be a minimal level of flame proofing, basically. in the jargon, it has to be level a2. but when you get the building inspector, what matters is the building is safe overall and nobody checks the fine print unless things go wrong. so the building inspectors have a different rule book and they say instead of everything having to be at that a2 level, they say, if we do at test and using this context, this bit is said, if you do this over here, you can use this slightly more combustible material. when the government has gone round pulling stuff of buildings and checking it, they have discovered it is not all to the high standard. so the industry is basically reacting to grenfell? yes, the nhp sea, one of the esteemed sector bodies, produce guidelines who have said so many people have done investigations and collected data and te

chris cook has the story. the grenfell tower still casts its shadow over britain. today the government revealed that the external cladding on 600 buildings is now being investigated. the house should be careful on speculation of what caused the fire but as a precaution the government have arranged to test cladding in all 11 tower blocks. shortly before i came to the chamber i was informed that a number of these tests have come back as compost the ball. the relevant local authorities and services have been informed and they are taking all possible steps to insure that buildings are safe and to inform affected residents. cladding was a key issue at grenfell, the building's outer skin was an aluminium composite material which is quite common, bound around a core of something. the best cladding has a minima lcore which is completely non—combustible but at grenfell it was polyethylene, a plastic, which may have let the fire spread so the government is looking at those at 600 buildings to see how many may have cladding which is too combustible. —— mineral core. a new wor
