joining us now with the reaction is chris coons of delaware.en the chairman made that proposal, what did you think? >> i think in the wake of the death of george floyd, the committee ought to be in an oversight hearing will be looking to a whole string of tragic killings, incidents that are deeply wounding to our country of police violence and then a response by communities. but when chairman lindsey graham says something like that it's a reminder that this has become a very politicized judiciary committee and judicial confirmation process. president trump has nominated and the republican majority senate has confirmed more than 200 judges. chairman graham is continuing to advance that agenda and there are other things i wish we would focus on that we should focus on. the pandemic response and recovery and the ways that's impacted federal law enforcement and federal prisons and a lot of other issues that are under the purview of his committee for this tragic recent killing in minneapolis. >> jon: we will talk about that killing in just a moment

joining me now are los angeles mayor eric garcetti and delaware senator chris coons, who are both supportingnitiatives. senator coons, we talked to you before about the legislation which is bipartisan. how would this work? >> andrea, thank you for a chance to be on and great to be on with my friend mayor garcetti, who's help lead this effort in los angeles and cities across the country. we have more than 80 co-sponsors in the house and the senate of a bipartisan bill that would expand the existing national service program best known as americorps. it would increase the pay modestly. it would increase the education award earned by members, but it would double this year the number of opportunity slots. so that would make it possible for 150,000 americans who are currently unemployed or who are looking for an opportunity to serve to be engaged in response. this would be locally led and driven by commissions that already exist all over our country, appointed by governors, that include nonprofit leaders, state and local government leaders, civic leaders and they would approve specifically targete

senators david perdue of georgia, todd young of indiana, john cornyn of texas, and democratic senators chris coons of delaware and pat leahy of vermont to introduce legislation to quickly address the plight of immigrant doctors and nurses who are stuck in this green card backlog. this backlog poses a significant risk to our ability to effectively respond to this pandemic. our bill, the health care work force resilience act, is a temporary stopgap bill that will strengthen our health care workforce and improve health care access for americans in the midst of this crisis. our bill would recapture 25,000 unused immigrant visas for nurses and 15,000 unused visas for doctors. these are visas that congress previously authorized but we never used. our bill would quickly allocate these visas to doctors and nurses who can help us today in the fight against covid-19. it is important to note that our bill requires employers to attest that any immigrant from overseas who receives these visas will not displace an american worker. we want to ensure that all beneficiaries of this bill complement our american hea
