i'm ashleigh banfield along with chris cuomo.hard to believe just 24 hours ago this place was teeming with people streaming out of this area. with law enforcement officers who didn't know the picture and now it's becoming fairly clear what happened. >> it's a huge task. they didn't know how many shooters there were. there were hundreds of casings exchanged, thousands of people who work in the area, thousands in the building they had to deal with. many didn't get to leave until midnight last night. imagine we didn't know what was going on, they couldn't contact family. but we had an opportunity to speak to survivors. this is why it was important, their own experiences of the pain and fear and many who observed what happened with their eyes and ears but what they noticed of the shooter in this situation and what it took for them to survive. here's the piece. it's a scene that's become all too familiar, reports of gun fire, panicked people rushing out of a building, countless stories of survive. witnesses of monday's shooting spree

in fact, he said that to chris cuomo here on the program "new day." all i kept thinking was how does he know. i know that he's been to syria. congressional visits are not really like going to syria, are they? >> reporter: no, congressional visits, believe it or not, are carefully scripted. so it's very hard to gain a picture of what's going on by just looking at a -- a congressional visit. let me tell you, far more accurate measure, and it's not 100% accurate either, is what journalists, particularly unilateral journalists who put their lives on the line together to see gather data and capture it, and the reports have been just devastating. the last six months. both kidnappings and more journalists saying it's just too dangerous. we can't go there. this is particularly true in the east and central areas, and north, even toward the turkish border. >> and i have to tell you, i was one of those journalists. i've been to syria, to afghanistan. i was a unilateral in both places. and i felt a very different story that emerged than what i heard in congress.

chris cuomo is live in washington at the navy yards. good morning to you, chris. >> how are you?where john berman has been this morning on reporting. a lot of questions coming up in this situation. one of the terrible facts, this is the seventh mass shooting in the past decade where ten or more people were killed. all too observe, we see patterns and that is a big part of the search this morning for investigators to figure out how this shooter got to where he was. what kind of clearance he had. how did he get a weapon into a secure naval facility? and then, of course, the big question, the haunting one is why this happened. we are learning more this morning and that is an important effort. people struggle with how much to dig into the shooter's past but only by learning why these shootings happen do we have any chance of helping to prevent them in the future. of course, we are also learning about the innocence, about those who lost their lives here for no good reason. we will deliver it all to you this morning as we work the story very hard on the ground here in the nation's capi
