here is chris eckhart. he was also suspended. there are his parents. that's not the school board meeting. at the school board meeting. he was the third plaintiff. the three that went to court were me, my brother john and chris eckhart. here is my brother john and i at the appeals court level. what do you think happened? we had lost at the district level, at the lower level. there are three levels, the district, the appeals level, and the supreme court. we had lost at the district level and i thought, of course we're going to lose. no big important judge is going to say kids have rights. so we had already lost. so it was at the appeals level now. i think i was in tenth grade by now. what do you think happened? who things we lost at the appeals level? yeah? who things we won at the appeals level? yeah, about half and half. should i let them know? let's see here. did we win our case at the district level? no. at the appeals level? no. we lost. okay. so can i go back to that slide of the -- let's see, how do i get back? i guess go back to this one. well, d

chris eckhart also went. >> what was that like?> well, it's hard for me to remember a whole lot about it because we had just moved to a new city, st. louis, which was a big city to me compared to des moines and trying to adjust to a new high school and it was november when we moved there in the middle of 11th grade so when we went to the supreme court right around that time i was very taken up with other issues having to do with sort of teenage years, who i was going to spend time with, who i was going to be friends with in class and things like that so i can barely remember the supreme court being there and certainly not very many details about it. >> so would you talk to us about the role of the aclu by the time the case gets presented to the court? what do they do in this process? >> the main thing you do once the case goes up to the court you write briefs. they would have written the opening brief, waited for the other side to reply and then written an answer to that so that's the primary thing and then you get ready for the or
