news4's chris gordon is live in silver spring right now with what you need to know to avoid chris? >> reporter: maryland elections officials ditched touch screens for early voting when they realized that there were so many candidates in some of these primary races that all of their names could not fit on a single screen. some of the candidates threatened legal action if they were put on screen two or three. so the decision was made to go back to paper ballots. for the most part early voting is running smoothly. electric touch screens have been replaced by old fashioned paper ballots where you darken an oval to vote. problems arise if you mistakenly darken the wrong one. >> because i did that, i had to darken every single dot on the paper and then cross out the paper and it just made me absolutely mad because this is a very antiquated system. we have gone back into the dark ages. >> reporter: we learned that voters who make a mistake have to void their entire ballot by darkening all the ovals doesn't accidentally get counted. >> if you have a problem with a ballot, if you make a wro
