chris gordon is outside the courthouse with more. chris? the transit center has been called a monument to inefficiency. this trial will determine whose responsible for that. the judge in this case has ordered the lawyers not to discuss it publicly for fear that a juror could hear or read something about this trial. the silver spring transit center opened after years of delaysnd overruns. today the trial started to determine whose responsible for the extra costs. montgomery county told its employees not to talk about the case and is taken down all references to the transit center from its website. the county and the washington metropolitan area transit authority are suing general contract foul jer pratt and other construction design companies for $40 million. some of the concrete cracked during construction of the transit center, necessitying repairs that cost time and money. metro refused to take delivery of the transit center of the time and riders were frustrated. >> it's sad in terms of the entire buildings, built you want to believe tha

chris gordon has the story. chris?eporter: well, jim, today prosecutors closed the murder that happened here in this wheaton home. the elderly homeowner, linda johnston was brutally attacked inside and today the man charged in the case, well, he entered a guilty plea. a neighbor called 911. he asked police to come immediately. he said linda johnston's family couldn't reach her for days. they were worried. >> didn't look right. >> when you say didn't look right, did you see anything in specific that -- >> there was a bad odor. >> linda was found in her bedroom, she had been stabbed multiple times. today in montgomery county court, quasi sadler of the district pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. sadler targeted johnston after he helped a friend who rent the from johnston and was evicted, move out of the house. sadler returned and broke in, he took a knife from the kitchen, went up to her room and killed her. last august, just days before the suspect was arrested, i spoke to linda johnston's former neighbor and friend.

news4's chris gordon has details from the courthouse. he's in rockville. >> this murder was ordered. >> reporter: it was a gang hit, according to 18-year-old christian villagran-morales was lured into this gaithersburg park last june by vanesa alvarado who promised him sex. she belongs to the ms-13 gang. she told him marijuana the day before. her companions asked if he belonged to a gang. he didn't. but for some reason he flashed the sign of the 18th street gang. >> that information was relayed to someone higher up in the ms-13 and his murder was ordered because he flashed a rival gang's sign. bottom line. >> reporter: prosecutors say alvarado brought him into the woods for gang members were hiding. they stabbed him more than 150 times. morales begged hear fior his life. in sentencing vanesa alvarado, the judge said as he was being stabbed, she urged the others to continue. alvarado will spend a good part of the next 40 years in prison. satisfied. >> i'm pleased with the decision that the judge has made. so she will pay for what she did

chris gordon talked to the victim's daughter today. she says she's surprised to learn that her father's dead but hopeful that there will be some closure to this, chris? >> reporter: well, jim, detectives can't promise that they will be able to close this long-standing murder case with an arrest or even identify a killer but they are hoping to provide more answers to the victims family. in october of 1984, a man and his son found human remains while walking in those woods behind me here along baltimore avenue in beltsville. these are police pictures where the woods where the skeleton was found in october 1984, now more than three decades later advanced fbi fingerprint technology has identified 27-year-old from louisiana who last hugged his newborn daughter good-bye when he joined the marines. >> did i search for my dad throughout the years, even when i was a teenager and stuff. >> reporter: monica davis tells me by face time her only comfort is now knowing that her father didn't abandoned her. >> but i was very relieved that he didn't ru

chris gordon is outside the courthouse with more. >> reporter: the silver spring transit center was originally budgeted to cost about $30 million, but after years of delays, the price tag was about four times that amount. today the trial began here at the montgomery county courthouse to determine who should be responsible to pay those extra costs. there are teams of lawyers, the jury was told to expect the trial to take 30 days. judge michael mason has warned lawyers not to discuss the case for fear of tainting the jury. they will have to decide who is responsible for construction delays and costs overruns at the silver spring transit center. here's how metro back then. >> it has grown to quite a mon stron sisty. >> reporter: they are suing the general contractor, the designer and other subcontractors who built this silver spring transit center claiming negligence. there were concerns about cracks and the structural integrity of the building. some of the concrete and steel beams had to be fixed costing more time and money. montgomery county is seeking $40 million in damages but general contrac
