i'm chris hayes. 2014 was the hottest year on record. that is a backdrop to all of the news this evening and everything else on the planet. there was also huge news from the supreme court today. what will likely be one of the most iconic cases in history has now been taken up by the supreme court of the united states. the court announcing today it will hear argumenting on the constitutionality of same sex marriage. if the united states constitution requires states -- for anyone waiting for the supreme court to finally address this head on this is it. court specified the issues would be limited to these, too. does the 14th amendment requirement a state to have a license of two people of the same section. are they required to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex. many people thought the court might take up this very same issue last october. it fails to do so. at that point, every single federal appeals court that addressed the issue ruled in favor of same sex marriage. to repeat by last october, every single federal appe

i'm chris hayes. almost 100 million americans watched the championship, three times as many as watched last night's state of the union. tonight the most profitable sports league in america, one of the largest media enterprises we have faces yet another crisis. that is because there is increasing evidence according to a new report from espn that the new england patriots now super bowl-bound may have been caught cheating in their route to the indianapolis colts to the championship game. according to the report nearly all of the game balls on the patriot side were underinflated. chris mortenson, the nfl has found 11 of the new england patriots 12 game balls were inflated significantly below the league requirements. the footballs were inflated two pounds per square inch, or 2 psi below nfl requirements. psi is 12.5 to 13.5. while underinflated footballs are favored by both the flavors who catch them and the quarterbacks, like tom brady, there is no reporting thus far about who may have altered the footbal

i'm chris hayes. al qaeda in the arabian peninsula has officially claimed credit are to the massacre at the offices of "charlie hebdo" carried out by two french brothers, cherif and said kouachi. an 11-minute video shows that it was ordered over its insult over the prophet muhammad and saying that his group trained and financed the operation. anwar al awlaki was killed in a drone strike in 2011 and having coordinated the operation. citing a source within the group broke the story that aqap was claiming they had directed the attacks as discussed on this show. but today marks the first time aqap has officially and definitively made that claim. u.s. state department today confirmed the authenticity of the aqap video though the investigation into the link between the kouachi brothers and the jihadi is continuing. aqap has not presented any kind of definitive evidence that it was responsible for the attack leading some to wonder about the level of coordination, particularly since anwar al awlaki, who alleg
