and live from texas is my colleague chris hayes.iven the president's comments today, doubling down, what is the reaction if any you're hearing out there and what are you seeing on the ground? >> well, people are really upset what's going on here. and everyone who touches this system is saying it hasn't been like this before. that the combination of the policies being chosen by the administration and the numbers that are coming is creating a crisis on the administration itself is telling people they're overwhelmed. and there are sort of two policies working in tandem. i was talking to an immigration lawyer down here, and there's two things that's happening. we've been focusing on immigration, the zero-tolerance policy in which they're charging people with misdemeanors and separating hair chirp and very unclear how they get them back. another thing is people being turned away at ports of entry when seeking asylum through the proper channels. asylum is enshrined in american law. they show up at the proper place where they are supposed

we will have to see. >> chris hayes take fous the ground there in texas. how has the sense changed on the ground since the news that the president was going to do this? what will people face? i mean there is so much to resolve from what has already happened, children who could potentially remain separated. we had a former dhs obama official say some of these separations could be permanent. then there is the question of running out of space. >> first all i would love to see the tech to the executive order. this is something the white house will often do announce something and not send us the text. it's hard to know what to make of it. i don't have the details. i don't know if they have released it yet. i was in federal court in mcallen today around the noontime break. we were told usually there are hearings in the morning and hearings in the afternoon when they are being in the people who they are mass of the wering for misdemeanor unlawful entry. there is some speculation that was in advance of this order because they wanted to see what it would do. the bi

i'm chris hayes from the epicenter of this crisis just a couple miles away from the u.s. southern border here in mccallan, texas at the larlgest immigration processing center in the country where children are being separated from their parents off crossing into the united states. this is the trump administration's policy and the crisis is accelerating. according to new government data released by dhs, the trump administration separated 2,352 children from their parents between may 5th and june 9th, a rate of 65 children taken from their families every single day. up from are about 46 per day over an earlier period starting in april. in just the last couple hours, the president wrapped up an immigration meeting with house republicans amid a growing bipartisan backlash across the country and across civil society to his child separation policy. this story has exploded since all-in began covering it about four weeks ago. now we're at the border on the front lines to show it you what our government is doing to the children in its custody. we're not alone. tonight the last word

i'm chris hayes. a major scoop today that adds to the overwhelming evidence of potential obstruction of justice by the president of the united states. tonight it, axios is breaking news the president's private campaign to pressure attorney general jeff sessions was much larger and more intense than we first knew. axios reports on at least four separate occasions the president personally appealed to sessions to reclaim control of the russia investigation. at one point reportedly telling sessions he would be a hero if he unrecused and if he investigated hillary clinton. sessions who was a part of the trump campaign recused himself from the investigation of the trump campaign last march after revelations had he met with the russian ambassador during the campaign, something sessions did not disclose somewhat infamously during his confirmation hearing. that meant the number two at the justice department rod rosenstein took over the russia investigation and eventually oversight of special counsel robert mul

chris hayes verified there were 17 cases where people were going -- adult immigrants would be charged with misdemeanors for crossi ining the border illegal but those skass were dropped specifically because they had children. "the washington post" said that's the new norm, they won't be prosecuting just for crossing illegally. justice department countered, said no, that's wrong, customs and border protection is wrong, everything we have heard is wrong, we are still prosecuting everyone. how these families get reunite and who gets prosecuted is still unclear. >> wow. >> wow. >> wow. >> this was actually -- trump caving was out of character from what we have come to expect from him. he's been under great pressure on charlottesville, he doubled down. on his travel ban, he doubled down. this time we saw influence from pressures from republicans on the hill which are usually allies. the first lady's been doing this behind closed doors. it was a confluence events that led to this very out of character caving 24 hours after he said we can't do anything through an executive order. he did one.

and in fact, we have gotten some reporting from chris hayes who's in touch with people in mccallen, texas, 17 immigrants came in today who were supposed to be charged in federal court with misdemeanors but they were not charged so they could stay with their family. that is not the zero tolerance policy. so for the president to say he'll continue zero policy, you can't have both of those things. so in fact they're throwing out those misdemeanors, at least now. at least in the 17 cases that chris heard about today. part of that is just the technicalities. if you charge someone in federal court, you have to hold them in the custody of the u.s. marshals. and you can't hold children there. often people are going through civil proceedings that would be getting an asylum claim or an order of deportation. none of this makes sense. i mean, from where the children are, to where these people are going to stay. we understand the department of defense is looking into places where families can stay to whether or not people will even be charged for crossing the border illegally as the president said the

chris hayes here on msnbc has done a good job of digging into this. and what he has found, over 90% of the separation result from criminal prosecutions. that is completely separate from asylum, immigration court, deportation. and if you are arrested in this country for any crime, you are separated from your family. because criminal jails do not have the capacity to deal with families. and so, what the zero tolerance policy really is, is a new initiative to enforce what is a misdemeanor. and will likely only end up in a sentence of deportation. happen in immigration court.ld but that ultimately results in these families being separated. then, as you go through the system and the process, kids can be lost from their parents as particularly when we're talking about thousands of people. and particularly when we're talking about an administration that was not at all prepared for this. so, the administrative burden and the bureaucracy is tremendous. and so, children can easily get lost. but for the president to claim that the only fix is legislative, when o
