i am chris hayes. seven weeks to go. everyone is obsessing over swing state polling on phones and various outlets. odds for who will win. the reason for that obsession with seven or eight states, oh, new poll in arizona, is of course that we don't elect our presidents by a popular vote in this country. we have a frankly undemocratic system, the electoral college. it is the reality of how american elections for president have worked for 230 years and our citizens and parties and candidates, everyone operating the election works within these constraints. that is how it works. that is one of the ground troops of this election. the other ground truth that defines the selection and the campaign right now is that one of the two candidates has shown us and told us he will not commit to a peaceful transfer of power. the harris-walz campaign is, i think it is fair to say, running uphill, in other words. the thing is, the only option for kamala harris and democrats and the pro-democracy coalition, popular front, the only thing the

i am chris hayes. it is the first week of school for most of the country. tragically and not surprisingly there has already been a school shooting. four people were killed at a high school in georgia today. two students and two teachers. a 14-year-old suspect is now in custody. when this kind of thing happens it is hard to feel like nothing can be done because mass shootings have unfortunately become a kind of national periodic ritual. because we are in a presidential election this year, things can be done. there are glaring policy differences on this issue between the two campaigns. they are very far apart. one wants to do something about it and the other definitively does not. we will discuss those differences later on in the program with colorado governor jared polis, whose state has seen a number of shootings and is trying to do something about it. gun violence is front of mind for many voters, especially young voters. a poll we did recently found 85% of gen z voters are concerned about experiencing gun violence in public. 59% saying they are very conce

good evening from new york, i am chris hayes. we are following breaking news in florida where a category 4 hurricane is about to hit the florida panhandle. hurricane helene is now categorized as an extremely dangerous storm with wind at 130 miles per hour. yesterday helene pummeled cancun as a category 2 hurricane, bringing down trees and disrupting travel as it made its way up the gulf to florida. today the storm rapidly intensified. it is now expected to make landfall in a few hours with that category 4 strength. the florida state capital, tallahassee, is in the direct path of the storm. forecasters are warning there could be an un-survivable storm surge possible up to 20 feet, higher than the typical one story home as the monster storm comes up short. meteorologist bill karins is tracking helene's path and joins me with the latest. >> chris, this does not look like it will make it to category 5, but a category four did storm will do incredible damage to the coast. we are 3 to 4 hours away from landfall. they expect that betwee

i am chris hayes. the labor day holiday is over. it is the first tuesday of september. the first tuesday of november's election day and that means, yes, it is happening america. we are two months out. 63 days to be precise, which means the sprint is on to the finish. republicans are getting very nervous about one thing in particular. party leaders are warning top donors privately and publicly in panicked tones, they need more money to compete with democratic spending. the head of the republican party senate campaign is telling politico the only thing preventing us from having a great night in november is the massive financial disparity our party clearly faces. let's be clear. it is a fundraisers job to sound panic and ask for money. maybe you have seen that in text you have received. donations have been through the roof in every election cycle since strome became the face of the republican party, but this case looks different and it does look like some of the panic is warranted. here is why. we don't have a full tally from both campaigns, but in july the harris campaign

i'm chris hayes, any minute now, vice president kamala harris will speak at a campaign event in the border town of douglas arizona. right now you see the attorney general. we're going to bring that to you live as it happens. this is kamala harris' first visit to the border as a candidate. she will announce she plans to keep president biden's hard line crack down on asylum seekers in place. in fact, she may even make it more difficult to lift those restrictions. it is clearly a calculated move by her campaign. that will be a high issue. it consistently ranked among the top issues facing voters. harris will also likely go after donald trump directly for his goal on killing the bipartisan bill that was hammered out earlier this year. she will decry trump's failures and his recent efforts to kill bipartisan solutions to it. she'll say the american people care more about border security than playing political games. it's worth noting, border crossings are down wildly across the board. about 70% since last august. that's according to the numbers that everyone relies on which is the customs and b
