hill. what is the latest from there? >> good morning, chris. the chief concern on capitol hill is members of congress won't be sufficiently consulted before president obama gives an order for some sort of military action against syria. you have republican senator john mccain who said they want to see a robust response to these attacks. at the same time, 116 members of congress, most of them republican but also 16 democrats have now signed on to a letter urging the president to consult and receive authorization before taking any sort of action. house speaker john boehner called for the president and congress for why this would serve u.s. interests. some gop senators have said they believe the war powers act allows the president to order limited missile strikes and then report to congress afterward. nevertheless the white house says the views of congress are important and the white house plans to brief congressional leadership as well as the chairs and ranking members of the national security committees today via conference call. kate? >> athena,

the aforementioned democratic congressman chris and holland joins us now from capitol hill. i am sure you heard dan henninger, one of the lead writers at the wall street journal had to say that the end of his remarks, 2% growth and what you would like to do so why not pick up and get into details, getting rid of the sequestration. what is your response to what dan said? >> we need to dig out of the economy. we are seeing growth but i will be first to agree growth is too slow which is why the government analysis is important. is the independent nonpartisan congressional budget office who has told us if the sequester remains in place you are talking about 1 million fewer jobs between now and the end of september of 2014 and that adds up to 0.7% gdp. according to the congressional budget office. it is clear the sequester is a drag on the economy. we proposed replacing the sequester so you achieve the same deficit reduction but over a longer period of time and for accommodation of more targeted cuts and also tax expenditures. connell: we will begin to that. the sequestration rep

chris, it's good to be with you. i've probably sat through several hundred intelligence briefings over the past couple of years at the cia on capitol hill and not one has been as definitive as this or horrifying as this. this really ranks up there as one of the most convincing and compelling intelligence cases for using military action in this way. and in terms of your question about deterrents and talking about iran, let me point out two things. in 2003, iran suspended its nuclear program. we know that definitively. why did they do that? in part because that was the same year we invaded iraq. we were in both countries around iran and they feared our military. now that wasn't the objective of the iraq war, but that was one of the consequences. >> right. >> also know in january of 2011, chris, if you'll recall, iran announced it was going close the straits of hormuz. if iran closes the straits of hormuz, they were going to cross a red line. we were ambiguous what was going to happen. the uss lincoln was going to the straits. you know what they did? not a thing. the lincoln sailed. >> let's make some news here tonight, jeremy. the secreta

we just heard from chris english yesterday in testimony on capitol hill to a very skeptical house committee that contact chaining on those numbers when you pull those numbers is down to two or three hops. so there's a well deserved expression in newsrooms there's a danger in a reporter doing math, but let me give it a try. let's suppose, and i think this is fairly conservative, the median number of unique contacts for people making phone calls is 100 over the course of the year. three hops means 100 times 100 times 100 nor a potential -- [inaudible] which happens to be approximately the population of the united states. we've all heard about six agrees of accept -- six degrees of separation. three hops goes very far. so when they say they've only pulled 300, they're drawing an associational graph of at least tens of millions assuming a fair amount of overlap, but certainly probably hundreds of millions of people. >> right, right. and it's based on trying to understand the things that that person has been identified, the probable cause as being a threat to the united states has done that we o

chris, it's good to be with you. i probably sat through several hundred intelligence briefings over the last eight years on capitol hill, at the cia and the defense department. not one has been nearly as definitive as this one and not one has been nearly as horrifying as this. this ranks up there as one of the most convincing and compelling intelligence cases for using military action in this way. in terms of your question about deterrence and talking about iran, let me point out two things. in 2003, iran suspended its nuclear program. we know that definitively. why do they do that? in part because that was the same year we invaded iraq. we were in both countries around iran. they feared our military. now, that wasn't the objective of the iraq war but it was one of the intended -- that was one of the consequences. >> right. >> i also note in january of 2011, chris, if you recall, iran announced it was going to close the straits of hormuz. secretary panetta and chairman marty dempsey of the joint chiefs walked to the briefing room and said if iran closes the straits of hormuz, it's going to cross a red line for the unit
