former ambassador to iraq chris hill.he dean at the korbel school at the university of denver. ambassador hill, what about the saudis and kuwaitis and qataris who helped create isis when they were the rebels against bashar al assad in syria? how much responsibility -- how much blowback is there against the very people now really concerned about these militants? >> well, i think we do need a broader strategy. obviously, we're doing some of it, but i think it has to be far more comprehensive to deal with these countries on precisely this issue. i think the real problem in syria, which is, obviously, spilling over into iraq today, has to do with the fact that there's no political way forward. even if bashar al assad were hit by a bus today. they wouldn't know how to rule the place after that. there has to be some type of contact group plan of what syria looks like in the future. there's a lot of thought in the u.s. to arming the moderates but that's a project easier said than done. i mean, to go on to the battlefield in syri

joining me now the former am bass tour to iraq, chris hill. he's dean of the international studies at the university of denver. good to see you ambassador. if the united states does a deal with iran, what is in it for us? >> well i think we have to be careful with iran. obviously, there should be some discussions but gather those are going to be taking place this week. but i would stop well short of some kind of military coordination. after all, the iranians have really been up to no good in iraq the last ten years. a lot of the weaponry that shia and militia groups have used in the past used against americans has been provided by iran. so i think we need to be careful about that. at the same time i don't think we want a situation where the baghdad government is only getting help from iran. i for one think the united states needs to be active and i'd like to see it active in the form of air strikes. >> when you say you don't want to coordinate with iran military, what can we do over there? are there some diplomatic moves that we don't know abo

. >> we're joined by ambassador chris hill, former ambassador to iraq. he's now dean of the joseph korbel school in denver. john kerry meeting face to face with a series of leaders in iraq. what real leverage does the u.s. have here? seems the leverage is a lot more with the system than it is with prime minister maliki himself. >> well, that's very true, but i think john kerry has really hit the right note, which is this is not up to the united states to choose their prime minister, but he has clearly conveyed the fact that we don't want to see maliki with a third term. and i think he's allowing the iraqi political system, which is moving forward and moving forward quite quickly in these days to come up with someone not named maliki as prime minister. the real trick, and i think this is where the real diplomacy has to be is in two yairareas. one is to say to maliki, you've been terrific, but time to turn it over to someone else. it's a hard message. and then, two, and this is even more important. to say to the sunnis, look. we have supported the idea of

former diplomat chris hill who is joining us, the dean at the university of denver school of internationalambassador hill, you're a career diplomat. you spent your whole lifetime in diplomacy. do you ever remember a time when the united states has freed, released a prisoner who's wanted by the united nations for war crimes, one of these five detainees, as you know, was wanted by the united nations for ordering the slaughter of thousands of afghan shiite muslims in the 1990s? has the u.s. ever done that before? >> not to my knowledge. i mean, certainly the israelis have negotiated prisoner releases of ratios of 100-1. so the idea of the different ratio is hardly new. i think the question is, you know, you always go into a negotiation hoping the other side will do something for nothing. but the other side never does something for nothing. in this case was a five for one. and these five taliban, that issue had been on the table for some time. so it did not surprise me, but i can't think of an immediate precedent for it. >> and can you think, bob baer, because you spent a career in the cia. yo
