nicole jacobs is live on the scene with details. >> reporter: chris, kathryn, the fire is out now, but certainly it was a fierce one. take a look here to the right side. you can see the windows completely blown out, charred out inside. investigators are still there working to determine exactly i want to get you right to some video from overnight where the flames were absolutely fierce. when crews arrived here, the chief says there were flames shooting from the rear of the second floor in the walls and traveling through the ceiling, moving very quickly. everyone was evacuated. the chief says that was actually a challenge simply because of the time this fire happened. residents were either in bed or heading to bed but no one was injured. that is certainly the good news here. the chief says the conditions changed so fickly, they weren't even able to initially do a secondary search, which is something they typically do. they do that first search and then do a secondary search. he says the conditions were just too bad. taking another live look here. this is actually the rear side of that bu

jacobs is live with more. good morning, nicole. >> reporter: good morning, chris. right off the bat, officials knew the baby was with his mother, but no one knew 37-year- old tiffany cherry was driving her severely dehydrated son to children's hospital and the amber alert was issued detailing the make and model of the car she was believed to be driving along with the license number. it was a nurse who recognized her name and called it in to police. cherry drove her son from pennsylvania up to boston after doctors in pennsylvania said he needed serious trauma care. police -- or documents indicate the 37-year-old mother felt she was getting the run-around from the doctors in pennsylvania and drove him to boston. now she faces child endangerment charges and has several open warrants here in massachusetts related to prostitution and driving violations. those span over about 13 years, but she is expected to be arraigned here in roxbury district court today. in the meantime, the department of children and families has custody of that little boy. we're live in roxbury, ni

chris, kathryn? >>> the teen accused of raping and killing his math teacher in danvers goes on trial today. >> jury selection will get under way today. nicole jacobs has a closer look at this case. good morning, nicole. >> reporter: good morning, chris and kathryn. it was nearly two years ago colleen ritzer's body was found behind danvers high school and almost immediately one of her ninth grade math students. he was also reported missing and seen on surveillance video and following ritzer into a spool bathroom. it was inside prosecutors say the then 14-year-old chism attacked his math teacher raping her slitting her throat. the next day ritz wears found dead and chism walking along the side of the road. it was widely reported that ritzer asked chism to stay after school as he seemed distracted earlier in class. with videotaped interviews, he confessed saying ritzer provoked the attack by insulting him. that videotaped confession became the source of debate. chisms lawyers say they coerced him into making that confession. ultimately, the judge denied allowing it to be part of at he is being tried as an adult. his attorneys are expected to use an i

nicole jacobs has a closer look at the proposal. nicole? >> reporter: chris, of course there are countless distractions while you are driving, but here in massachusetts, lawmakers are trying to minimize even those that we see on a daily basis. they are looking at the idea of banning handheld cell phones while driving. of course texting behind the wheel was banned several years ago, and drivers 18 and younger are not allowed to use cell phones at all while driving. the conversation opens today that could ban it across the board. these are laws that have been implemented in 14 other states including new york, new hampshire, connecticut, and vermont. several bills are on the table today. one would impose a $100 fine a $250 fine for second-time offenders and a $500 fine for third-time violators. of course technology has improved by leaps and bounds when it comes to this type of issue. that is something that could be in favor for those who are in favor of this type of bill. of course today is just opening the conversation. no decision has been made. nicole jacobs,

nicole jacobs has a closer look at this lawsuit. nicole? >> reporter: chris, kathryn, outside of what many who consider the convenience of uber there is a lot of controversy surrounding it. now the company faces a lawsuit where it claims neglect and fraud when it comes to the say thety of young women. two women, one right here in boston say that they were sexually assaulted by uber drivers. the other alleged victim is out of south carolina. they are named jane doe 1 and jane doe 2 in the suit. they say the company falsely advertises safety, but instead solicit young women that have been drinking. in february, jane doe number 1 said a boston uber driver assaulted her. she and three friends were picked up in the north end. jane doe number 1 was the last in the carp that's when she says the driver indecently touched her several times. a 36-year-old man was arrested and charged in that case. an attorney for the two alleged victims released a statement reading, "the lawsuit is seeking to hold uber accountable for what we believe to be a focus on profits over uber'

nicole jacobs is live in lowell where crews were working overtime to clean up the schools. nicole? >> reporter: chris, when a number of students get sick, certainly it is cause for concern for school officials who definitely took the utmost precaution when that situation came about, but it appears at this point that they believe it was just a virus that spread among students. we are told that about 60 students saw the school nurse yesterday. that's out of a student body of 600. those 60 students did ultimately go home for the day. school officials called 911 around 11:30 and had five students transported to the other students and staff were evacuated. overnight, professional crews cleaned sullivan middle school from top to bottom. they even conducted tests to assure the safety of the school, but in the end, they believed this was just a virus and that only those five students displayed the symptoms that initially appeared to be carbon monoxide poisoning. again, they believe it was a virus and school is open for the day. we are live in lowell. morning. >>> now to a story you first saw on wbz. a man ac

nicole jacobs is live outside the court in roxbury this morning with more on this court appearance. nicole? >> reporter: chris, kathryn, authorities knew right away that this 2-month-old little boy was with his mother, but exactly where they were headed was the big question. no one knew 37-year-old tiffany cherry was actually taking her severely dehydrated child to children's hospital here in boston. an amber alert was issued detailing the make and model of the char she was believed to be driving, along with the license plate number. it was a nurse who recognized her name and called it in to police. cherry had driven her son from pennsylvania all the way to boston after doctors in pennsylvania said she needed -- or he needed serious trauma care. police documents indicate the 37-year-old mother felt she was getting the run-around from doctors in pennsylvania and drove her son to boston. now she faces child endangerment charges out of piston, pennsylvania. she also has several open warrants here in massachusetts related to prostitution and some driving violations. those span over the course of about 13 years, b

. >> nicole jacobs is live outside the courthouse in dudley with more on the investigation. good morning, nicole. >> reporter: good morning to you, chris. according to the police chief joseph zuniga thought nothing wrong of sending these photos allegedly to this student because he said he was 17 years old. you certainly have to remember that 17 is still considered a minor. let's take a look at the video here. this is joseph zuniga leaving the police station yesterday. he had his mother cover his face with a jacket. according to the police chief the 22-year-old teacher met the 17-year-old student several years ago at church. they became facebook friends and this year that zuniga's class. upwards of 10 photos were sent through facebook messanger. the school acted swiftly and sent a letter to parents, many of whom are concerned. >> it's kind of weird. you know if you sent send a nude to a student you shouldn't work here. >> they're young and close in age and i'm sure attracted to our children. i would say that's a concern. >> reporter: zuniga is expected to be arraigned here sometime today. nicole jacobs, cbs this -- wbz this morning >> t

jacob johnson whose family said he finally found his path. sarena dawn moore. 59-year-old kim dietz, and the dplrk professor, 67 freerld lawrence levine. another student in that classroom was chris mintz, who's now being called a hero. the 30-year-old army veteran ran toward the gunman in an effort to stop him. he was shot seven times but survived. 18-year-old anna boylan had a bullet hit near her spine. as he lay wounded she called her brother telling him the gunman asked about their worry and brave. it's bravery. >> reporter: here at the college, classes have now been canceled for all of next week. this is a small community, scott, where virtually everyone has been touched in some way by this tragedy. >> pelley: john blackstone for us tonight. john, thank you. the 26-year-old dwun man died in a shoot-out with police. he had several extra magazines of ammunition. he lived near roseberg in an apartment with his mother. seven guns were found in that apartment, and six more guns were found at the crime scene at the college. troubled man for a very long time. here's justice correspondent jeff pegues. >> reporter: investigators say chris harper mercer's arsenal of more than a dozen

those people that have a lot of healing to do, stories like chris mintz are inspiring people, and it is amazing as we heard from our colleague, jacob soboroff as he talked to the campus president, rita cavin, saying it was carnage in eden. i am looking at the site behind me, and it is absolutely beautiful here at this campus in rural oregon. msnbc's jacob soboroff is at the command center. you were there for the sheriff's press briefing. what new pieces of material or of the story did we learn? was it mainly about the amount of weapons he had on site, on campus with him? >> reporter: it was, thomas. actually that information came from atf special agent nunez, didn't come from the sheriff. there's still so much information from the sheriff we don't know about the families, still no names, about the shooter, he says the medical examiner will release the name of the shooter later today, the sheriff didn't release that information. perhaps we will get more information in 45 minutes' time. we are 20 feet away from where the governor of the state of oregon and a delegation will be gathered to talk to the media there. >> thanks so much. w

nicole jacobs is live in saugus on how police are trying to track down this driver. good morning, nicole. >> reporter: good morning to you, chris. good morning, bree. the scene here on route 1 in saugus has long cleared. you can see traffic is flowing just as normal but a significant crash happened here last night in the 10:00 hour. i want to get right to some video of the active scene last night where investigators were here trying to piece everything that happened. details are very far and few between right now. pedestrian was hit by a vehicle that did not stop. that victim was transported from the scene to the hospital with life threatening injuries. authorities believe they are looking for a red mercedes-benz that will have some damage to it because they say some parts of that vehicle were left behind here at the scene. according to state police this morning, we're told they have not found that vehicle yet. they're still looking for that vehicle. anyone with information is certainly urged to contact police. we're live in saugus, nicole jacobs, wbz this morning. >> thank you. >>> two people are recovering this morning follow
