joining me live in boston is msnbc chris jansing, host of "jansing & co." she went this afternoon to talk to people in dorchester, the hometown of the youngest victim of the blast. chris, thanks for being here tonight. >> thank you, rev. >> tell us, what was the mood in dorchester today? >> reporter: well, i should first say that this is a very strong community and you can't help when you get there to notice that. i spent a lot of time at the community center, spent a lot of time at a local play ground. the kids are out of school. it's spring break. a lot of moms were there with their children spending time together and they talk about how important it is for them to be together at this time. i would also say that the shock of what happened here a few days ago is wearing off and giving way in many cases just to deep sorrow, to heartbreak and the reality is setting in. several of the mothers told me that their children have been wicki waking up in the middle of the night, where is marty? why can't he play baseball with us? it's a community that has a lot to f

i'm chris jansing. two journalists of "the boston globe" were at the finish line. they were taking in the scene, as the runners and first responders reacted to the attack. here's what they saw. >> just the finish line, getting the late runners across, at 2:50 p.m., sitting up on the finish line. things going along swimmingly. and then, boom. and smoke just billowed straight up into the air. and me and the other photographers just immediately ran over there. and within 20 seconds of that, as we were starting to get a grip on the scene, a second explosion went off up in the ne next corner, at boylston and fifth. both devices were in trash cans. we had a number of cuts and bruises. facial cuts. i saw a man who lost part of his leg. the police, the fire, everyone was scrambling. it was a chaotic scene. and the injuries were nothing short of horrific. the other thing turned quickly into a crime scene. it's been known as the best day in boston. a lot of people out there, unfortunately. they turned a beautiful day into a horrific day and nightmare. >> i was standing on th

. >> nbc's chris jansing joins us now live from boston. chris, what an emotional time for the city of boston. >> without a doubt. this is a city that is grieving. it's also a city that's coming together. and we saw it in a very big way and in a heart warming way last night in dorchester which is the home of 8-year-old martin richard. a big crowd came out to show support for the family. it is hard to even imagine what they are going through not only losing an 8-year-old but the mother who had to undergo brain surgery. she had a very serious injury whether the entire family was near the finish line of the boston marathon. and their little girl, just 6 years old, first grader, who lost her leg. but last night we saw people lighting candles. they were laying flowers, stuffed animals and a lot of peace signs. one of the moving pictures that has come out of this is less than a year ago when little martin richard had made a sign that said no more hurting people when he was in a peace march at school. the school where he went called him a bright en

joining us from boston, chris jansing. take us through how president obama will spend his day and the developing situation, chris? >> reporter: good morning. i'm right across the street from holy cross cathedral. and the president will be arriving here for an 11:00 a.m. service. we've got a look at the program. it will include religious leaders, the mayor will be here. governor deval patrick. among those in the congregation will be the former governor of massachusetts, mitt romney. and yo-yo ma, the great cellist who went to harvard, will be performing as well as some chorus. it's a simple service. it's one that is all-too familiar to the president, who will be, for the fifth time in his presidency, be consoler in chief. after the ft. hood tragedy. in tucson, in aurora, colorado, the horrific shooting at the movie theater. and most recently in newtown, connecticut. this is a community that is still in grief, still in mourning. it's not just here. we saw emotions coming to the fore in washington yesterday. with the secretary

. >> joining me now at the top of the hour, msnbc's chris jansing, correspondent michael isicoff and michael leiter here, as well. chris, i want to begin with you as you spent an hour on site there talking with people that have been dealing with this tragedy. i think one of the more interesting things revealed was the fact that the police department is calling this the most complex crime scene that they have ever encountered. >> it is not surprising, i don't think, thomas. that crime scene processed just a few blocks behind where i'm sitting but bostonians as people around the country trying to process what happened here, huge headline in "the boston globe" that says marathon error and very, very graphic picture of what happened here almost indescribable. 176 people as you talked about injured. including brothers. they had gone to watch a friend run the race. their mother with five children got a call. both of her sons lost a leg. and then you talked about the youngest victim, the 8-year-old. his mother had brain surgery. his other sibling also lost a leg. so the tragedy, the depth of

chris jansing takes over now. >>> good afternoon, i am chris jansing. we continue to follow that breaking news. two explosions at the finish line of the boston marathon. this is the first dramatic video we're getting of what appears to be a large catastrophic explosion. one after the next. we do not know the cause or the full impact at this hour. but first responders have been rushing to the scene. they came to the explosions that hit just about one hour ago. we do have reports of multiple injuries. some of them severe. former police commissioner bill bratton reportedly cited as many as 50 people injured. again, in the chaos that is ensuing, it's difficult to get a real number, but as you can see, people being taken from the scene in wheelchairs and on stretchers. we are also getting the first pictures showing the destruction. you can actually see part of the grandstand apparently destroyed. people injured on the ground. now, this is an area in boston with a train line running right underneath. it's unclear if this could be an explosion from under the g

. >>> i want to check in with msnbc's chris jansing, host of "jansing and company." she's been reporting from boston and joins us. chris, this morning, we had the fact they were able to solidify the complex area, as they called it, from 15 blocks to 12 blocks, now over 24 hours later, what is the scene now? i mean, we can see the police are still behind you. >> reporter: yeah, and that whole area is cordoned off with the yellow police tape and there's a heavy police presence both there and around this city which obviously is very subdued. this is not the kind of post-marathon day people would expect. people come from nearly 100 countries to run in this event, and there's often a celebration, you know, just that they finished. most of these are not elite runners. they're people like you and me who have done a personal accomplishment. i think the thing we've seen here, though, thomas, today, in addition to the police presence is the other side of this. how the community is coming together. there are a number of church services that are planned for tonight and tomorrow.

joining us from boston, the host of msnbc's "jansing and company" chris jansing. thanks for joining us. >> many of the people from newtown actually were here because of that dedication of the last mile. some of the family members, some residents were either running or cheering on. none of them was hurt. but we do now know and got confirmation this morning that 176 people were taken to hospital. three of them died. you mentioned martin richards, just eight years old and two of those seriously wounded. and there are 17 in critical condition, but two of them are his mother, who had brain surgery and his sister who lost one leg. all of them were there to watch martin's dad run in this marathon. you mentioned two explosions, confirmation this morning from investigators there were two blasts. they were a few hundred feet apart. about 15 seconds apart. you can just imagine the scene at that finish line. there are 23,000 people who are running in this marathon, about two-thirds of them had finished by that time. there's bane lot of talk about the people who had yet to fin

>> chris jansing thank you so much. and chris, you just referenced this. let me read a statement just released from bill richard, the father of martin richard. he has written, my dear son martin has died from injuries sustained in the attack on boston. my wife and daughter are both recovering from serious injuries, we thank our family and friends, those who know and those we've never met for their thoughts and prayers. i ask that you continue to pray for my family as we remember martin. we also ask for your patience and for privacy as we work to simultaneously grieve and recover. thank you. with that statement, we go to ron allen outside mass general, ron, this is obviously the most tragic of many tragedies, an 8-year-old child this family with the wife, the mother and daughter, also grievously injured. there's so many more in the hospital behind you as trauma surgeons are desperately trying to bring people back to recovery and many people with amputations and lower-leg injuries. ron? >> indeed, andrea. and the young boy killed is from dorchester, which as

joining me now live from boston is msnbc's chris jansing, host of "jansing & co." i wanted to ask you because it really got to me about this 8-year-old boy. what more are we learning? >> the first pictures we saw of him was this kid with this megawatt smile and it broke your heart. then there was something else that came out, and it really has moved people so deeply. it was a photo taken less than a year ago. and the school that he went to was having a peace march. and he had made a sign. it had just four simple words on it. no more hurting people. and then a peace sign. and to think that he was the victim of violence. he was there at the finish line with his family. they had gone together to have a great day. apparently he had just come back from getting some ice cream. and when the blast happened, he was killed. his mother had to have surgery. she has a serious brain injury. and his sister, who is just a first grader at the same school where their mother was the librarian, has had one of her legs amputated. the school released a statement about young martin richa

i'm chris jansing. today the lone living suspect in the boston marathon bombings is expected to be formally charged. we know dzhokhar tsarnaev is still in serious condition but talking to investigators mostly in writing because he's got a bullet wound to the throat. and the boston police commissioner has said he believes there could have been more attacks. >> there were over 200 rounds fired at the scene. they were armed with sidearms and explosive devices. one that has been widely publicized was one of the pressure cooker devices similar to what we saw on boylston street. >> and beyond any immediate threat or the question of motive, there is another question that is key to this investigation. as evidence mounts that the older brother, tamerlan tsarnaev took a radical turn, when exactly? what about that six-month trip to dagestan and chechnya. i want to bring in pete williams. good morning once again. i want to start with dzhokhar tsarnaev. do we know specifically beyond serious condition how he's doing

>>> coming up on 8:00 east coast time, good morning from new york, i'm chris jansing. that 19-year-old boston marathon suspect captured last night is now at beth israel deaconess medical center in boston suffering from a gunshot wound and blood loss, officials expect to question him the moment his condition improves. dzhokhar tsarnaev was captured last night in watertown after a local resident discovered him hiding in a boat in his backyard. almost an unbelievable scenario. went out to have a cigarette, next thing you know he sees some blood. he sees that a tarp was cut. that was after that enormous manhunt paralyzed the city and turned the region into a virtual military zone. tsarnaev along with his 26-year-old brother, tamerlan, who died early friday in their standoff with police, is accused of planting bombs at the finish line of the boston marathon monday. three people, of course, were killed. scores more wounded. many of them still hospitalized. and also later they shot and killed police say a 26-year-old m.i.t. police officer, sean collier. the fbi's hostage resc

. >>> and chris jansing is in boston on top of the latest developments there. chris, it appears now today you're closer to the bombing site? >> we've hearing all along that police wanted things to get back to normally, a weird word to use when you've had a tragedy. as quickly as possible. this is an area of commerce. you can see the big white medical tent that was essentially used as a trauma center in the aftermath. this is by far the closest we have gotten to that crime scene. we also learned today at times there's been as many as 100 investigators working this crime scene. they will continue to shrink it. they believe they definitely are making progress, both in findings parts of the bomb being analyzed, looking at all those individual photographs, and pieces of video, looking for a suspe suspect. >> there was also an interesting analysis. an assist found 6% higher police presence this year at the marathon than the last. of course they are looking at every aspect of this. you can see the activity behind me, andrea. >> and chris, what we're hearing now is thes
