i'm ari melber in for chris jansing. vernor chris christie pushing back calling recent allegations a game of political got ya. christie insists he had nothing to do with the gridlock on the george washington bridge, just days after a former appointee accused him of having direct knowledge of that shutdown. christie said he had nothing to do with the lane closures and only learned about them after receiving a memo from the port authority chief. also for the first time christie acknowledged he may have been aware of the, quote, traffic issues, before that. >> i know prior to that there were press accounts of traffic issues up there, and if someone, you know, if i either read that or someone said something to me about traffic issues up there, it wouldn't have been meaningful to me, because i didn't know there was any problem up there, because i didn't know we had actually closed the lanes up there before that. >> meantime, fired christie deputy chief of staff bridget kelly has imposed fifth amendment rights 5:00. let's bring

let's go right to it in sochi with msnbc's chris jansing. gold medal event for women's figure skating. how do the americans stand going into this final performance? >> reporter: they're still in the hunt, ari. that's the big news. i'll tell you, they didn't disappoint with the short program last night. yuna kim, who was expected to be in the lead, the defending champion from south korea, skated beautifully, but then everything went kind of haywire. let me tell you where the americans stand. gracie gold, who had to fight for several of her landings, this is something she's learned from her new coach, the legendary frank carroll, and she said she was not going to be denied landing those jumps, she's in fourth. she is in the hunt far medal. and so is ashley wagner. she is a scrapper, a fighter. she has indicated that from sixth place the only way she can get on that podium is to try something crazy. now, what's crazy in figure skating? a jump or combination of jumps you have not done in international competition before. for her that would likely

good morning to you, i'm ari melber in for chris jansing. we're beginning today with the snowstorm, impacts being felt far and wide. in philadelphia, for example, a huge pileup involving up to 100 cars you can see in, snarling traffic and that's on an icy philadelphia turnpike. two people were already sent to the hospital. the storm dumped as much as 28 inches of snow in some areas and there are now 21 deaths reported in connection with with this storm sweeping the country and over 400,000 people right now are still without power in about 15 states. more than 1,500 domestic flights have been cancelled this morning and nearly 3,000 delayed because of the ongoing after effects of all of this inclement weather. according to one estimate, it's going to cost businesses about $15 billion, and folks, it is not over yet. to give you more of the latest news, we have nbc meteorologist bill karins in a moment, but we are beginning right now with ron mott in portland, maine. go ahead. >> hey, ari, good morning to you. the folks here in new england are u

chris jansing live in sochi following the latest developments.no go for the men's biathlon and snowboard cross. what can you tell us? >> yeah, snowboard cross, really interesting, because if you were watching it all yesterday, you saw the women's snowboard cross, there were a lot of wipeouts on it due largely to the slushy conditions, but today, a lot of people were there. huge number of spectators, this is a really thrilling sport where they are racing down the mountain, there are jumps, there are obstacles, but at the top of the mountain, you couldn't see in front of you. the racers were up there, they were waiting, there were people checking the course with walky talkies and finally the determination was made it was just too dangerous. this is the first at x-treme park they had to cancel, actually not the first, the second event they had to move back. you might remember the men's biathlon, where they ski, then shoot, they couldn't even see the targets, so that wasn't going to work. they postponed that sunday to monday, now postponed it monday

more on the sochi games, we go to chris jansing with the latest on the games. so good to see you. let's talk about the reaction from the opening ceremony. >> reporter: it's different to see what you see and what we see at the games. i read a lot of reviews, they were generally positive. standing outside the stadium, talking to nbc colleagues inside and athletes exiting, they were thrilled. a big part of the games being here is the excitement that things are getting underway. there is a great spectacle, you know, that you see every year. i think overall, obviously, when you are here and feeling that energy, it's positive. there were a couple controversies. one, the ring that didn't light. you probably saw that yesterday, one of the olympic rings didn't light. maybe not the worst thing. bigger than that, of course, is the person who lit the caldron. she is a big superstar here. three-time gold medal figure skating champion. she posted a picture that is considered racist about president and mrs. obama and took it down friday. that caused controversy here and, of course, in the states

our own chris jansing is live in sochi for her seventh olympic games. chris, what is the latest that officials there are telling you about this security situation? >> well, let me tell you first what's going on on the ground and if i sound out of breath, it's because i've been running here. i can tell you with the opening ceremony about to get under way, we've seen a noticeable step-up in security, the lines are starting to get long. up until this point, things had seemed to be going much more smoothly, but now is the first time they'll have to deal with the crowds so they are being careful as they let people go through these checkpoints and you need not just a ticket, but a security pass that allows you to get on the grounds of this olympic park. in terms of what's going on at the airport, i just spoke to members of the u.s. delegation who have just arrived, janet napolitano, brian boytaneau, they told us they were impressed with the level of security, but, obviously, these threats, this chatter that they heard, there could be a threat in toothpaste tub
