nbc's chris jansing is at the white house to tell us more about it. hi, chris. >> reporter: hi, lester. well this latest embarrassment for the secret service really has people shaking their heads incredulous that experienced senior agents could become a target of investigation by the inspector general of homeland security. and it comes at a time when they know scrutiny of the agency has probably never been higher. for years he was one of the elite agents president obama trusted with his life. from ireland to arizona to ohio, but now mark connolly and senior supervisor george ogilvie are being investigated for what happened late on the night of march 4th. "the washington post" first reported the agents drove a government car into white house security barricades after drinking at a late-night party. nbc news has learned it started here at a bar in chinatown at a party for a co-worker. then it's a quick drive to the white house only about a mile away. now, at the southeast gate of the white house, a woman pulled up and got out of her car. according to the

chris jansing is at the white house where president obama was quick to fire back. chris, what did he have to say? >> good evening, lester. with even some democratic supporters of the president calling this speech powerful and persuasive president obama did indeed fire back point by point for 11 minutes from the oval office. he suggested the speech was theater and politics and criticized netanyahu for offering no viable alternative. >> the alternative that the prime minister offers is no deal in which case iran will immediately begin once again pursuing its nuclear program, accelerate its nuclear program, without us having any insight into what they're doing. >> reporter: he also argued the ongoing talks have actually kept iran from getting a nuclear weapon. he was responding after reading the speech. here's where he was during it. in the situation room, for a meeting added to his schedule just this morning. one senior white house official told me that, given the rankor between the two leaders, this will be a tough couple of months going forward. if there is a deal f

chris jansing?but any reaction where you are? >> reporter: chris, people are stunned. we use that kind of terminology all the time in this business, but it really counts here because as the day has progressed, we have learned, first from the "new york times" and then from other news organizations that it was becoming clear that the pilot, or one of the two pilots had locked themselves in the cockpit, but we didn't imagine, as you mentioned, 9the french prosecutor would come out and make this statement. i think he felt as if he had to frankly, because the whole thing was already emerging. what we are being told about, by that french prosecutor, by the way, chris is that he is asking the german authorities for information on the personality of the copilot. i mean we really know nothing at the moment about this copilot. he does appear to be a german national. you've been talking about the amount of flying hours that he had, and the fact he just had come and joined eded this airline after training. so a

chris jansing?> michael, are there any restrictions that you know of of the kind of medications that a pilot can take and if for example, he was diagnosed with a clinical depression could he be on antidepressants and still fly? i'm just trying to figure out what the medical background might be and what they might be looking at. >> right. basically up to five years ago you were not allowed, at least in the united states to take any antidepressants. they used to refer to prozac pilots. that comes out of the mythology of pilots who used to come out of the military highly seasoned, highly trained, and then occupy civil and commercial spots. we don't have that environment anymore but the rules are antiquated. so certainly antidepressants are allowed. the whole concept of self reporting, what pilot outside of the physical side what pilot is going to come back to his or her supervisor and say, i'm having some mental problems i'm having some real issues. they're fearful for their jobs. the airlines need to

chris jansing has more. what have you got? >> even though we know today was going to be a day for an interim agreement, that the details were going to be worked out by june 30th what we've heard from the white house is if we see from between now and june 30th that it isn't serious we will walk away and we could walk away before then. at least they think they are making some progress toward the interim deal. take a look at what the press secretary said a very short time ago. >> it's time for iran to make the serious commitments they know the community is expecting them to make to reach an agreement and if they're not willing to make those serious commitments, then the united states will alongside the international community will be in a position of having to consider some other alternatives. >> the question is what are those other alternatives. earnest reiterated what the administration has been saying for a long time now. everything is on the table including military option and iran is fully aware that the united states is ser

joining me now from the white house is nbc news senior white house correspondent chris jansing.nk you for being here. >> thanks rev. >> a spokesperson for the president says he's quote, disappointed to hear about the allegations. what else can you tell us? >> there's a lot of investigatoring going on one of the key pieces of evidence is there are cameras everywhere. there's government video of this and one of the people we have talked to who has actually seen the video said that those agents, when they broke through a police tape and arrived on the scene, they came very close to hitting it. that area was secured, but you had a woman who got out of her car and said this was a bomb. so obviously this was a potentially very dangerous situation. the other thing that i think is happening, reverend is they want to get this done quickly, because joe clancy who was brought in to change the agency wants to show he can take decisive action here. >> but chris, mark connelly is the second-most senior member of the president's personal security details. this news certainly suggests the secre

chris jansing joins us now live. the statement from the white house is what. >> reporter: what the white house has said that the president was briefedly lisa monaco and they don't see any connection to terrorism right now. they reached out to french german and spanish authorities offering whatever help they can give and extended sympathies to the families of those lost. >> chris we'll continue to follow the latest as we have confirmed that one of the black boxes has been found. one the big things on the president's agenda as well as yours covering the president today is the fact he's holding a white house news conference with the president of afghanistan and we know what has been discussed here, that is the finalization of a troop pullout from the u.s. do you have any details of what might be revealed coming up in an hour? >> it's possible we could get short term information, 2015 information about the plans for the pulldown. for people who don't know, at the center of this really is about u.s. troops in afghanistan.

chris jansing. : well they argue that is different. the letter sent out directly to the ayatollah was signed by republicans. there are some democrats that are supporting a congressional bill that would give congress 60 days to look at any agreement and the administration although they don't like that length of time, they say they have never suggested that congress doesn't have any oversight. it is just that it doesn't make any sense. in fact nearly unprecedented to get involved in a negotiation like this foreign policy which they say is the president's purview, in the middle of sensitive negotiations. as you know, thomas the clock is ticking. they have set a deadline at the end of this month, the 24th perhaps, where they want to get this done. and so they say it is a very clear distinction they are making between what the republicans have done and what some of the democrats are supporting, thomas. >> and trying to stay on track with that time line. chris jansing. chris, thank you. >>> we turn our att

so joining me right now from the white house, we have nbc news senior white house correspondent chris jansinge start with you of what this charge of desertion and the degree of desertion and that is important about if he is convicted. >> reporter: that is right. there was the charge of court marshal but a lesser charge could carry up to five years. the question is is there a deal that has been worked out. jim miklaszewski from the pentagon reported in january this was the most likely charge and they may consider giving him time served. understand. >> the white house and the pentagon were saying this was a prisoner of war. these were -- the taliban are battlefield enemies and we were engaging in a practice we were doing to capture -- to return captured soldiers as we've done in the past. there was also the side effect to that, that the general accountability office did say there was concern or perhaps a violation of u.s. law that the white house did not notify congress that this swap was going to take place and there was a lot of concern about that as well. >> really complex issue of dealing w

with me now senior white house correspondent chris jansing with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. >> the state surrounding iran and now the talks getting down to the wire seems to be things are sprouting every minute almost? >> reporter: you're right, jose and obviously these negotiations reach add critical phase with the clock ticking and a deadline last week. we heard from u.s. secretary of state john kerry over the weekend saying progress had been made. other international negotiators saying the same. in fact, there are some reports that they've reached an agreement on one of the key parts of this which is how many centrifuges iran would be able to maintain. having said this, a letter like this really is aimed at ramping up the pressure on this administration and it's something that the administration doesn't want right now. they haven't wanted any kind of what they consider to be interference with ongoing negotiations that they believe can still come to some positive conclusion. so we really are watching what is intense pressure here at

chris jansing joins us from the white house. good morning. no secret. the relationship between the white house and netanyahu is strained to say the least. what are officials saying this morning? >> reporter: good morning, jose. a high drama in washington. it's going to get started quickly. obviously, the white house from the begin hag said that they don't think a couple of weeks before israel holds its elections that it's appropriate for benjamin netanyahu to come and also there has been concern on their part that timing is bad, as they're in the middle of these delicate negotiations over iran's nukes. having said that you heard secretary kerry yesterday trying to tamp down what has been a lot of conversation especially among analysts who say that the relationship between the u.s. and israel is at or very near a new low. take a listen to john kerry just yesterday. >> obviously, it was odd, if not unique, that we learned of it from the speaker of the house, and that the administration was not included in this process, but the administration is not seekin

nbc's chris jansing joins us this morning. how are you? >> i'm good jose. how are you, jose? what the agenda will be but i think we have some informed inside information here about some serious topics that you can expect prince charles to speak about with the president. last month the prince was actually in the middle east. he's very close to many of the royal families there, and he visited saudi arabia and kuwait and jordan and so you can expect the middle east and as it relates to isis to be on the agenda and some conversations about those leaders in those countries. in addition to that as you probably know, prince charles is a very well-known environmentalist. it's something he has done from the time he was a very young man, and the president today, in fact we just had a call with some of the president's senior advisers. the president said to sign an executive order to cut back greenhouse gas emissions in the federal government by 40% over the next decade and so i'm guessing there will be some environmental topics on the agenda as well. but it's also been fun for the princ

let's go to chris jansing for more on this. what can you tell us about the agents in question and how this is publicly putting the new director clancy in the first embarrassing position of his new post? >> reporter: he's barely started as the full-time director and under all of this pressure now. people are watching very closely to see what he's going to do about it. you're looking not at low level folks or inexperienced people but two high ranking members of the secret service, in fact they are so high up in the agency that the secret service is not going to investigate them they've turned it over to essentially the parentship, homeland security where the inspector general is now involved and leading this investigation. the one you mentioned whose name is mark connelly he is someone who was within arm's length of the president for years. he was one of the elite people who was basically entrusted with the president's life. then you have george ogilvie, who is well known to many people in the media, one time been a spokesman. yo

chris jansing is at the white house. good morning to both of you. kelly, lots of build up to the speech. what will we see today? >> you're going to see the politics outside of the capital as well with protesters just outside the door where i'm at both for and against. the appearance of benjamin netanyahu. and inside the house chamber, there will be some absences. roughly 48 to 50 so less than 10% of all of congress is publically telling us they do not plan to attend. those are democrats who believe that this is an inappropriate time for benjamin netanyahu to come before congress with his own election back in israel just two weeks away and concerns about whether or not this is an attempt to disrespect president obama. bn benjamin netanyahu said absolutely that was not his intent and he will not speak in that way today, he says. but his purpose is to outline concerns about the u.s. deal that is in the making. negotiations going on with iran over its nuclear ambitions. congress has wanted to play a part in that and to have a say in the outcome. and the

chris jansing joins us now with the 24 hours later. chris? and if you saw yesterday you saw how much emotion came out and continuing today on members of congress. reinforcing people on both sides, the people who support what netanyahu had to say, seemed determined to keep this kind of deal from going through. on the other side it seemed to make them feel as though it was pure politics discounted. and they felt he went too far. and the president with an 11-minute response and looking almost irritated taking his speech point by point and said look we aren't there yet. even john kerry has suggested that the chances of a deal are only 50/50 but promises if there is a deal he will go to congress and personally try to convince every member to see it his way. but there is no doubt about what i think one senior ranking democrat said to me that if and when this does go to capitol hill, it will be quite a challenge, thomas. >> and john kerry met in switzerland with his iranian counterpart this morning. at issue is a seemingly unattainable deal with ira
