nbc's chris jansing is with the campaign in santa barbara. what is the campaign saying now about sanders' chances in california? >> reporter: well, i talked to the california director of the sanders campaign late yesterday and he said they're feeling good about it. look, the polls show this race is definitely tightening. hillary clinton was winning not so long ago by double digits. latest polls show her up just two or three points, that's within the margin of error. having said that what the sanders campaign points to is what we're seeing inside here. and there's been a steady stream of folks all morning long, some of them lined up five to six hours before this event was even scheduled to begin. they continue to draw these big crowds. i was checking, alex, over the last week some of the crowds he's drawn here in california in ventura. almost 10,000 people in san bernardino, 5200, santa monica 7200, vista, 7,250. it answers the question about whether or not once people realize that hillary clinton was just about 100 delegates, less than 100 no

nbc's chris jansing is in paris. chris, good to see you this morning as we're getting our first crucial findings on the investigation, including reports of smoke there in the cabin coming from the bathroom, actually, and newly found wreckage. so are officials optimistic that they're getting closer to finding out what happened? >> reporter: there's no doubt this is a crucial bit of evidence, these communications from the plane to communications, experts on the ground both operational and maintenance, operation centers. it said a couple critical things. one, two areas of smoke conditions. one that was in a bathroom near the cockpit, the other where the avionics is. this is where the electronic equipment is. that is highly unusual if there is a fire in that type of plane in that area. there is a second set of alarms that went off that had to do with control of the plane and the computer systems, all of that happening in pretty rapid fire, within about three minutes. what that doesn't tell us is what precipitated them. ag

let's go to chris jansing who is covering it. let's go to her right now. >> how you doing, chris?t wrapped up here. we're in ft. wayne, indiana. short time ago, he had 3,000 people out in evansville. it is rowdy here and he is combative. surprising a lot of people yesterday when he talked about the fact that it was going to be a contested contest, taking it all the way to the convention, after sending all these signals that what he was really looking for was who influence the platform. that was not what we heard at all from him just minutes ago when he went after hillary clinton hard, talked about a rigged system, and you know how this works, chris. he's looking to turn these super delegates. but if you want to look at history, i mean, he is a lot further from where hillary clinton was behind barack obama, back in 2008 when she decided she would going to bow out. but he's going forward, in spite of the fact that his fund raising this past month was down by 40%. and obviously there are a number of big states coming up that favorite hillary clinton, chris. >> the accepted definition

we want to get out to chris jansi jansing, she's in paris. chris, how are the french?d about the efforts to try to get the french to participate directly with the egyptian here, how are they working to help with this search? >> no official reactions to that request yet. i can tell you what they have been doing since hours after this plane disappeared, to get the kind of information that egyptians believe it is critical for this. looking at a mere 67 minutes that flight was on the ground here. who had access to that plane. there is a law in the european union that states in a plane comes outside of the eu, it has go through a security check before it takes off again. this plane, egyptair would have been subjected to that. usually outside security firms are tasked with it and of the compressed amount of time. it might have been done, for example, at the same time that the plane is being cleaned. those cleaners and crews and anyone with access to that plane. that's the kind of information and background checks that are being run on now that egyptians are asking for. in ad

let's go right out to nbc's chris jansing covering the sanders campaign from california.putting out a statement moments ago, what are we hearing from the senator himself? >> reporter: he condemns the violence and put out a statement before the nevada conservation calling for calm. having said that, this statement put out i don't think is exactly what harry reid was looking for. while it condemns the violence, it also says the democratic party has a choice, as if they are challenging the dnc, it can open its doors and welcome into the party people prepared to fight for real economic and social change and people willing to take on consolidawall street corporate greed and wall street and challenge the status quo. it talks specifically about the violence that has happened. he said, within the last few days, there have been a number of criticisms made against my campaign organization. party leaders in nevada claimed the sansers campaign has a quote penchant for violence. that is nonsense. our campaign has held giant rallies all across the country including high crime areas and

chris jansing, my friend n colleague, is with sanders. what are you expecting today? there's been all of this talk about a sanders/trump debate. i'm hearing trump not that serious about it, but the sanders campaign is a little more serious. what's are you hearing? >> obviously, they would love it. they'd love the attention. they've really been hitting hillary hard over the fact she backed out of a debate here in california. it's giving them another talking point. another reason to bring that up. but more than that, the ratings would be through the roof. donald trump made that point, and bernie sanders has been on the road the last 24 hours saying we're going to rent the biggest stadium we can find in all of california. he's been getting those big crowds, obviously. you mentioned 10,000 at two events yesterday. a total of almost 15,000 people. a debate would be a way for him to take that huge group and he says it would actually help because nobody has really taken donald trump on in terms of income inequality. in terms of what he'd do for the middle class. there have e

now let's turn to the sanders side with chris jansing. we run through the delegate math.ng at the states, a lot of the states do look like bernie sanders states. he could put a lot of wins on the board over the next month. >> well, he thinks so. certainly west virginia is a place, they don't do a lot of polling here. in the couple of polls done here, he's comfortably ahead. he'll have three events today. it's interesting to watch television here in west virginia because there is a vehemently anti-hillary clinton ad running about her comments about coal miners. it's run by a down ticket race, a conservative running for supreme court justice. and it is on the air all the time. it's important to remember this is a state where bill clinton won easily the two times he ran. in addition to that, hillary clinton is running against somebody who is against fracking, who has a record you'd think that coal miners and others interested in those issues wouldn't even be close to get approval for. but he is really resonating with this populist message in a state where unemployment is a p

let's head to kentucky and nbc's chris jansing. you've had multiple one-on-one interviews with sanders this week saying he's in it to with it. how far do you think he can take this momentum, especially off that west virginia win? >> reporter: only two options here. one is to win and win big. well, maybe win overwhelmingly, hugely, because that's what it would take for him to challenge hillary clinton at a convention there, still talking about a contested convention. the second part, francis, is what does he want, what does he want on the platform. that's become a source of real contention between the sanders campaign and the democratic national committee which he believes has not shown him the kind of respect he should get given the fact he's won 45% of the delegates so far. he's going to be here in kentucky again today. he's coming back tomorrow. this is the kind of state, along with oregon who both vote on tuesday, favoring sanders. hillary clinton has decided she's coming back as well which shows both campaigns are working on tw

chris jansing outside charles de gaulle airport.s officials release this new video of debris recovered from the mediterranean i was able to talk to msnbc aviation analyst john cox and i asked him what was significant about the smoke aboard the aircraft. >> this event unfolds much more slowly. there's a three minute period where there's six faults that are generated and transmitted to the maintenance facility. there's two smoke events but also indications of overheating on the wind screens, on the right side of the airplane as well as flight control computer issue. but after the six faults, after the last one of these six faults the airplane flies on for a period of four minutes before it starts down and we know there's electrical power to this airplane. this whole event unfolds over a much greater time frame than we initially thought. this tells me as an investigator for something 30 years that we need to keep every option on the table. it may or may not have been an explosive device, it may or may not have bean fire, it may or may

chris jansing is live in paris and lucy is on the eastern coast of sicily. chris, let's start with you. what's the very latest of what could have happened to the plane? >> reporter: the search for the blacks boxes is intensifying because they're going to be key in finding out exactly what happened in those final minutes, jose. a couple of pieces of critical equipment of made their way to the eastern mediterranean. first of all, from egypt, there's this submarine. it's not manned, it's a robot submarine, usually used in offshore oil drilling, but that will help them in their search to locate these black boxes. in addition from france there is a ship with specialized equipment on it that could help them find those pings that last just 30 days. also divers who specialize in this kind of deep dive search. finally, some police onboard. so anything that is found in the water below the surface they bring onboard, that they will have it secured there. in the meantime, there is a lot of rumor out there. in the absence of hard, physical evidence of any one theory about

joining me now is nbc's chris jansing from ft. tinue making his argument today. chris, good seeing you this morning. >> reporter: good to see you. >> what do we expect from sanders today? it seems as though it is a very big hill to climb. >> reporter: yeah, it's almost straight vertical, let's not kid ourselves. even if he convinces all those superdelegates to come over, look, he's still behind. and so he would have to, as he pointed out, so overperform what he has done so far in places like here in indiana, looking toward to some of the western states and then of course california. what keeps him going? let's start with fund-raising. for the first three months of this year, he outfund-raised hillary clinton. it was only last month his fund-raising after his losses, especially the big loss in new york, dropped off 40%. he's about even with her, though, for last month even though she raised another $9.5 million for democratic candidates. it's definitely enough money to keep him going to the convention. and here's the other thing tha

nbc's chris jansing is in ft. wayne, indiana, with the latest on the democratic race. ow he's defining a contested convention based on the superdelegates who by all accounts are with clinton. >> reporter: yeah. so let's look at three sets of numbers because i think they're all relevant to heading toward that contested convention in philadelphia. the first set of numbers you already mentioned and we can put another full screen up that shows you the fund-raising for bernie sanders. for the first three months of this year, he beat hillary clinton. last month they were virtually tied, although she raised almost another $10 million for democrats. it's 40% down for him, as you pointed out. that is a significant drop based on losing new york, looking at the delegate math. it is, however, enough for him along with the layoffs and those saved salaries for him to continue through to california, to d.c. and on to the convention. second set of numbers, the delegate count that you mentioned. look, even if he's able to convince those superdelegates in the states that have already vot

let's go to nbc's chris jansing who joins us from paris outside their airport. chris, good morning to you. officials assisting in the investigation are also confirming the detection of smoke. how confirming are these findings? >> reporter: it's the first information we have, the solid detection information, alex, that gives detectives an idea what happened in the final moments of that crash. what do we know from that information? this is technical data that has gone from the plane to the ground, to operation centers, to maintenance centers. here's what it tells us. first, there was an opening in the window of the cockpit. then we see these two signals of smoke on the plane. doesn't say absolutely there's fire but an indication of fire. one in the bathroom near the cockpit, the other one in the avionics center. that's where a lot of the equipment is. then minutes later, two more alerts that have to do with the controls of the plane, the computer controls, so within three minutes you have these cascading series of events and no mayday, no indication from the pilots
