nbc's chris jansing is joining me now from kissimmee, florida, about the effort to get people motivated to vote. chris, you're walking along the streets. what do these folks think about the debate? >> reporter: i have literally gone out into a neighborhood and these folks are going door-to-door. is this the house you're targeting or around the corner? >> around the corner. >> reporter: we spent the morning with the clinton folks. now we're with the libra initiative, a conservative organization that work with puerto ricans, key demographic here, many of them coming to this country, literally thousands a month fleeing a terrible economic situation on that island. and even though they tend to favor the democrats, a lot of work is being done by the libra initiative. david is the regional director. tell us about some of the programs you have that target puerto ricans. >> sure. we have english classes we host every week at our office here in orlando. and we also have citizenship courses as well, but mainly for the puerto rican community, english classes, job skill courses, things that will he

chris jansing, what are you hearing on the ground there?it's not surprising hillary clinton decided to talk about hb2. that's that bill affecting transgender people. it's been in the newspapers here for three straight days, and that's because the naacp and the aac has canceled a vote on hb2. now as he put it, my beloved lrk gbts have gone away. take a listen. >> what i wish is that the law does not exist. duke has been very firm in its denunciation of the law. it's not just that we have a community that firmly welcomes every kind of person in the world here and then creates a world where everyone has the benefit of being fellow citizens with their neighbor. these things matter to us. i wish the law had not been passed. i wish it would be repealed. >> reporter: the clinton team here believes that hb2 helps them with college-educated white voters. that's a group that republicans have won for 60 years of presidential contests, but while mitt romney won it solidly in 2012, hillary clinton is ahead by seven points in that group. they think they

i'm chris jansing at msnbc world headquarters in new york where it is now 4:01 p.m. we begin with hillary clinton back home in chappaqua, new york, after falling ill during the 9/11 ceremony in new york city. she did leave that ceremony early, around 9:30 this morning, after feeling overheated in the words of her campaign. new video this afternoon shows clinton clearly unstable as she was being helped into her vehicle. she was then driven to her daughter's nearby apartment. and a few hours later she left chelsea's on her own accord smiling and waving. >> how are you feeling, secretary clinton? >> okay. >> are you feeling better? >> yes, thank you, very much. thanks, everybody. >> nbc's morgan bradford is near clinton's home in chappaqua, new york. what's the latest there? >> reporter: chris, we were here the moment hillary clinton arrived at her home. she was in that typical van she travels and followed by two unmarked cars as well as local law enforcement vehicles that were ushering her into that cul-de-sac where she shares a home with former president bill clinton.

nbc chris jansing has been keeping track on all the preps on this busy day here, she's right outside hofstra university. chris, what's happening there? >> reporter: you can see all the media who are here, at least a thousand members of the media. you got them up on the platform and below. the ones who actually are here are expected to be about a thousand another. 1100 or so got tickets to be inside. they have been tweaking the lights and they have three other college students here with similar coloring to donald trump and hillary clinton and lester holt who have been sitting in even so much as making the walk s s so they can get the shots right on those ten cameras there. there is the format. a lot of this stuff is agreed to and they had meetings about it. other things were done by a draw. hillary clinton is going to get the first question and then you will have tlehese pods, six of them for 15 minutes, two-minute for an answer and two-minute for response and ten minutes of discussion. the head of the debate commission tells me there is a lot of leeway there. they can do that and if s

but now i take you not just outside but inside, inside what's known as the spin room and nbc's chris jansingwhat is that room and what's going to happen there tonight? >> reporter: this is where they do the spinning, where both sides come to try to make their case that their candidate won. this is an astonishing number. 34% of people said that tonight is going to be very important in who they're going to vote for. how do they do it? sending people out, lists on the hillary clinton list. mark cuban, real people, as they call them and this is a first. take a look at the two stages. make america great again, that's donald trump's stage and by the commissioners on the debate. that's hillary clinton's stage and basically can do whatever they want with it. i ran into robby moot, the facebook manager. they'll do it live. many undecided or what they consider to be persuasive, people who aren't secure in who they're going to vote for are young people who don't look at tv ads. digital media is important and an opportunity to get the case out. >> chris jansing, you spin me right round, baby, right roun

let's go to chris jansing on the ground.n north carolina eliminated sunday voting and you have been talking about this. what are you hearing? >> this is forsythe county and there is anger and disappointment and people who belong to churching like this one who are old enough to remember what was sacrificed and what happened around the time of 1965. they are not going to go away quietly. they want to make sure everyone who wants to vote gets a chance. 70% of voters in north carolina voted early in 2012. that tells you how important it is. they thought it was celtsed because a law was thrown out by a panel of judges and that sent it back to the counties and this county did not allow all the reinstatement of sunday voting. when i talked to somebody who has been involved in the fight, those county meetings, she had never seen anything like it. take a listen. >> in the past they have been able to work through and compromise and come up with plans, early voting plans to serve the county. this time it's completely different. >> peop

it's where we find nbc's chris jansing who joins us now from winston salem, north carolina. ellow road warrior, chris, you have been looking into ballot and voter access in north carolina. >> yeah. a lot of people thought it was over actually. you will remember there was a big federal court ruling that said the new rule here, the new law here in north carolina had targeted black voters with almost surgical precision. they tossed it out. but what a lot of people don't know is it went back to a hundred different counties. on those two republicans, one democrat. while most figured it out, the fight still continues in some places like here in forsyth county because churches like this one lost sunday voting. that means souls to the poll, a time when literally hundreds of thousands of black voters would go together, get rides, have access to the polls on a day when they didn't have to work, now that's gone. the republicans argued they were trying to prevent voter fraud, something this court rejected. when i spoke to a very prominent gop operative here, in fact, somebody who worked

chris jansing caught up with him on the fly this morning. listen to what he had to say. >> you know, i think it will make some difference, but you're right. we are not counting on any one thing being the difference maker. >> what are you hearing from that crucial area of the sunshine state? >> reporter: it is lunchtime. maleo bakery is a place where a lot of the hispanic population comes. first, no republican has won the presidency without florida since 1924. >> tim kaine was here earlier as you saw. one of the huge targets, the puerto rican vote around the orlando, kissimee area. may exceed the cuban population. they tend to vote heavily democratic. the problem for clinton is when you live in puerto rico you can vote in the primary but not the general. they have been outregistering people all day. national voter registration day. andros watched the debate. he's a target voter here. what do you think of the debate? >> to be honest i'm still undecided. i'm so confused right now. there were so many arguments that didn't include the plan for ea

nbc's chris jansing is just an hour away from greensboro at duke university. who spoke with clinton earlier as part of an interview. let's start with chris. chris, you spent some time talking with a typically reliable republican voting bloc. white educated voters. tell us more. >> reporter: yeah, these are people with college degrees and more, and for 60 years they have voted not just a little bit but strongly for the republican candidate for president. we're seeing a complete turn this time around. last time mitt romney won that group by double digits. now we see that hillary clinton is beating donald trump. when we go out and talk to folks, again, college-educated white voters. these are folks who say they always or almost always vote republican for president. here's what they're saying now. >> with trump, you know, i want him to be able to come and pull off all these tricks he says is going to fix everything, but i just have a doubt. >> reporter: you would normally vote republican for president? >> yes, historically i have, correct. >> reporter: not this yea

nbc's chris jansing joins me live from winston salem where early voting is a hot button issue there.> this kind of church this predominantly african-american church is ground zero for this ongoing fight. a lot of people thought it had been settled because there was a federal court ruling that said a restricted new law unfairly targeted blacks. and they had to change it. each board got to look at what they were doing and here in this area they lost that sunday voting. souls to the polls, hundreds would go together have an opportunity to get transportation if they needed it on a day when they generally didn't have to be at work. so this continues to be an extremely difficult issue for a lot of folks including two of the par richer ins i talked to here about losing sunday voting. here's what they said. >> the anger and the frustration for me is about fighting. you know, we've been angry and frustrated. it's about fighting now. it is. it's about standing up for our rights and fighting. >> so how do you do that? >> well, you know, i'm a veteran. i've been fighting. i was a law enforcement

as part of the battleground america series chris jansing has been voting to north carolina voters.leground state i was in yesterday with hillary clinton. you have been talking specifically about donald trump's tone. we have been told that the clinton campaign will be coming back and back and back to north carolina. they think they can go on offense and turn it democratic. this time president obama didn't win it last time. what are the voters telling you? >> it's fascinating. we first talked to this group two and a half months ago. they haven't moved at all. those three undecided voters haven't changed their minds not moved over to one of the candidates by any of the controversies. not birtherism, the basket of deplorables. >> he says whatever he wants whether it is derogatory or offensive. he makes no apologies for it. we are supposed to just get along and be okay with it? no. >> hillary clinton did apologize. she made a comment about half of donald trump's supporters being in a basket of deplorables. do you wish she hadn't said that? >> i wish she never would have said that. >> sh

chris jansing is in gainesville on the campus of the university of florida.ou seem to get the good gigs. the bakery yesterday, rec center today. what are you hearing from the college kids over there. >> reporter: first have you ever seen so many well dressed college students in one place? the reason they are here is because this is a jobs fair. 375 companies. dow chemical. p & g behind me. 7,000 students are going through here in two days looking for a job. being able to find a job and pay off student loans, both key issues for millennials. if you look at the polls, the other thing that matters more than any other voting group is equality. racial equality and gender equality. that's why the story of alicia machado, the miss universe criticized for her weight by donald trump is resonating on campuses. two folks with me. natalia ortega is a registered republican who decided to vote for hillary clinton. and david is undecided as an independent voter. why does the story resonate for you? >> being a latina from colombia the first thing that resonated were his comm

let's bring in chris jansing joining us live from the spin room. you know better than anyone, the spin is already, do we have chris? we have kelly o'donnell, i see her. hi, chris. the game has changed since 2008 significantly. the spin is now happening before the debate. >> reporter: oh, yeah. i'm telling you, i talked to people on both sides of the campaign seeing your members of both campaigns and believe me, the spin is already going. part of what they want to influence, right, the folks here. i've learned there's going to be a thousand journalists minimum here tonight including a lot of international media. i was just interviewed by finnish television. way in the back behind the blue curtain at the back, hillary clinton's campaign manager tells me that that's where they're going to have their spin people. right, so that after the debate, both sides have their folks who come out here. they're going to be looking for media to talk to and try to make the case that their candidate is the one who won. and then this new thing. you've got two stages, s

chris jansing just interviewed the president of duke and joining us live now from north carolina. d he say? >> reporter: well, he supports the decision but, look, this is huge by the ncaa with implications for november and north carolina is a basketball crazy state. duke arguably ground zero for ncaa basketball by deciding to pull the first two rounds of the ncaa championships that are upcoming that were supposed to be held here in the state. it sends a powerful message and richard in an exclusive issue fully supports the ncaa's decision. >> we were extraordinarily disappointed when the law was passed, disappointed especially by the breadth of the law. and i am not surprised the ncaa reached this decision. >> somebody would say, this punishes students who want to see the games. this punishes the community, it has an economic impact. what would you say to them? >> i would say i see all those things. i understand all those things. it's a pretty rare decision you can get only advantages and no disadvantages but nonetheless, it was a way for the ncaa to voice its commitment to the worl

nbc's chris jansing joins us now from winston salem, north carolina. some local pastors there about this. what did they tell you? >> i talked to folks from predominantly black churches here. a lot of folks thought this fight was over because a federal court threw out what they said was an overly restrictive haul. they said it targeted black voters with surgical precision. having said that,s what happened was this went back to the counties where in every county there are two republicans and a democrat on the board. most of them have gone back to where they were in 2012. not so in forsythe county where it's one of the places where they have lost that sunday ability too souls to the polls. get thousands of people out to vote. here's what two pastors told me about their reaction. they say it brings up bad memories of history. >> it feels like a bunch of crap. in 2016, we expected to be further than we are. >> people gave up their lives and spent time in jail, were hosed and sicced dogs on. we want to make sure we don't have to go back there again. >> this

chris jansing is in florida following tim kaine as part of the battleground america series.is is the kind of place that you know about on the i-4 corridor where the race will be unable. less than a percentage point between clinton and trump. in a place like this, a very popular place at melao bakery. they want to register voters. they have been working here and it's hot. let me tell you. in spite of the fact hillary clinton has more advertising on the air, her ground game has been tight here and in colorado and pennsylvania. i asked tim kaine. >> we are a closely divided nation. i have only run races in virginia. we are always close in virginia. the only race i know is a close one. i thought this would be close. in fact, when i told hillary i was encouraging her to run in april of 2014 i told her don't worry about it. you're the underdog until they tell you you're the winner. if it was easy for a woman to be president we would have had one. this will be close until the end. >> reporter: this is a huge puerto rican neighborhood. they are training new volunteers. three of the
