msnbc's chris jansing is on the hill. mr. alexander, let's start with you at 1600. give us the lowdown. who's at the white house, who's the president meeting with, where is vice president pence? >> a bunch of good questions. we can't say for certain this meeting is under way, but it's supposed to happen about now, a meeting between the president and an outspoken critic of this republican senate health care bill. that is the kentucky senator rand paul, the two scheduled to be meeting at some point during the middle of this day. the president privately has been making calls to republican lawmakers. we're told he and his legislative team have continued their outreach over the course of the last 48 hours as well as they will continue to do going forward. as for the vice president, he's been a little perhaps more proactive in terms of the physical effort, traveling up to the hill for a republican senate policy lunch that begins as we speak. i'm told that after that he'll be meeting with maybe a half dozen republican lawmakers, some of them reluctant to come on board in s

msnbc senior national correspondent chris jansing was at the president's event in iowa where she remains tonight. robert costa reporter for "the washington post" and, of course, moderator of washington week on pbs. and kimberly atkins, chief washington reporter for the "boston herald" and a lawyer by training. chris jansing, how at all in your eyes did this differ from a campaign setting and describe the atmospherics you witnessed tonight. >> reporter: it was raucous. the more he went off script, the more the crowd fed off of it, the more then he fed off of it. something that might have gone a half hour they were anticipating no more than 45 minutes went for about an hour and ten. even though at one point he said we're not even campaigning but listen to the crowd. this was nothing if not an old-fashioned campaign rally. i was at his rallies during the campaign. it had that feel and that energy both from the crowd and from him. and we should mention that even though he said we're not even campaigning, this was paid for by his campaign. there were campaign signs everywhere. he went after t

chris jansing is also on capitol hill. chris, mitch mcconnell is notorious for his ability to make a deal, to whip his senators, to get things done. what does it say to you that he's going to have to delay this? >> reporter: you know, it's interesting. i just got a text from a democratic senior aide for a democratic senator who said do not underestimate the power of the phone call. that's interesting, because this morning, i was talking to a number of democrats about what was coming into their office. now, maybe not surprisingly, some of them were talking about 20 to 1 margins, getting thousands of phone calls from constituents overwhelmingly against these changes, but then, i ran into a member of the senate leadership, jon thune, and i asked him what kind of calls are you getting. he acknowledged to me that actually, he's been getting a ton of calls, too, but hey ener left. he suggested he was getting more calls from people opposed to it. it's a very different situation when you are from south dakota, when you win some of

we have chris jansing from capitol hill, wrangling white house eli stoke hols, i know you were at the white house where the action has moved from capitol hill down there. what do members expect to hear from the president? is he disappointed about a win or willing to be patient and wait for them to get their act together in the fall? >> you know, i think that the white house would like to see something get done by august so they feel like they have a little time. i don't know the administration was all that set on having a vote this week. but i think members are kind of waiting to see what they hear from this president. i think they anticipate that this is an executive who above all really wants a deal to get done. they saw the process play out similarly when the bill went through the house, first it was withdrawn. they had to meet and get together and president had to hear a lot of concerns from a lot of different lawmakers then they got to a place where they could get a bill through the chamber and have a celebratory press conference in the rose garden. i think the likeliest thing is

chris jansing has been looking into this. chris, what have you found out so far? tonnishing. hospitals have been closing at a rate of one each month. check out this map. a lot of people living here are trump voters. but hospital administrators i talked to over the last couple days say their patients are worried and unnerved by the possibilities their hospitals will go away. it's not an exaggeration to say obamacare helped save some hospitals. take this example. fulton county medical center in pennsylvania now have 10% more paying patients because more people have insurance. that's a huge difference when you are already operating on a very tight margin. so the $772 billion in lost medicaid money over ten years in the gop plan would be devastating. senators have been hearing from concerned constituents. here's angus king of maine. >> they are saying and as i say, i have been in farmington, bridgeton and lincoln, small maine towns, the same message. don't let them do this. >> so if you lose the hospital, if you have a heart attack or stroke, help is no longer a few m

chris jansing has been looking into all of this today. what are we finding? >> it's fascinating to watch protesters because even republicans when i was on capitol hill yesterday admitted that they have been inundated with phone calls and e-mails and if the senate health care bill passed it would have hit hardest right in the heart of trump country, lower income rural voters. that cbo estimate found that over the next ten years, $772 billion in medicaid money would be cut. look at what that would mean. 51% of rural residents in west virginia are on medicaid according to a recent report. 47% in alaska. 38% in maine, 37% in nevada. here ears what senator ben cardin told me about those cuts to medicaid. >> i think it would be devastating because rural people are vulnerable. they don't have the population. they have a large number of medicaid population. they have medicare. it will be very bad. >> i've been talking to hospital administrators in rural counties over the past couple days. they point out that obamacare was the lifeline for many hospitals because they

with me, chris jansing. chris? >> reporter: there's a lot of mixed emotions here.r some cheering in the background. crowds starting to come in. they're expecting 20,000 people tonight. that is a huge number. i talked to a lot of members of congress who are here and are playing and of course on their minds is steve scalise. they in their hearts are dedicating this to him. they're very obviously concerned about him. but as congressman mark sanford put it to me, just being here says you're not going to stop us. you're not going to keep us down. that's really the attitude here. there's a lot of excitement about the fact that so many people are coming out here to show their support. always this is a show of bipartisanship here as you know. the nation's pastime. but they're going to raise over $1 million here, double what they did last year. that money goes to a whole series of charities including the boys and girl club. but this year they've added just in the last 24 hours, the capitol police memorial fund. so this is a game that they say they're going to play intensely

helping me digest this, chris jansing who was in the hearing all morning long. . that was the beginning of the series of disagreements that we heard through morning between james comey and donald trump. >> reporter: yeah. this was in some ways a contradiction of a hearing. it was very serious. some might say at points, they were sober about the things they were talking about. but think about how it played out. in the first couple minutes after he raised his hand and said he would promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, the former director of the fbi accused the president of lying, of defamation of him and the fbi, and then meticulously laid out a case of mistrust. it started with that first meeting west knew yesterday that he went to his car and he started documenting everything. but today, we heard from jim comey. and remember, this is first time we have heard from him since he was fired. he said, it was the nature of the person that made him rvous. d then continuedo document every single time two of them had a conversation. he talk
