chris jansing is joining me now on the phone. chris, i think you're right across the street from the bus terminal, right? tell me what you're seeing and what you're hearing. >> reporter: it's a tremendous police presence, not just new york's police, but also state troopers, the fire department is here, countless vehicles, crime scene, ems, there are fire trucks, there are medical services, ambulances here. we see a lot of police dogs. i can tell you from this vantage point across the street, all the major streets are shut down in every direction northbound, east and west. and there's not a lot of activity we are seeing right now, because as you understand, from having the press conference, that things have been pretty much cleared away. that they are moving back the transportation. i will tell you as i was stopped trying to get to the location, i talked to a number of new yorkers. i heard major concerns from people not able to get to work or had to go around to get to work and were worried about being late. when i asked about the

nbc justice correspondent pete williams, chris jansing is on the scene in times square as well. pete, what have the investigators learned so far about the suspect? any idea if he had any connections, how he entered the u.s. and that kind of thing? >> there's a fair amount known about his background. he came here in february of 2011 on a kind of visa that you use when you're coming here to join family members who are already in the u.s. we know he has a brother here, other family members. so, that's how he got to the u.s. and he's been here since 2011. he had a taxi driver's license from 2012 through 2015. we don't know if he actually drove a taxi or if he drove some kind of other ride-sharing program, which we have to have a taxi driver's license in new york to do. but -- and we don't know what he was doing for a living at the time this happened. as you say, authorities are searching his apartment and also other addresses he's associated with. his brother's apartment as well. trying to figure out where this device was built. now, fortunately, it was a very crude pipe bomb. it di
