in the capitol city of kiev who were joined this afternoon by republican senator john mccain of arizona and democrat chris murphy of connecticut. they told the crowd of more than 200,000 that americans support their resistance. protestors want closer ties to europe, not russia. on friday the united states said it was freezing the assets of dozens more companies, it says violated the sanctions against iran. today iran responded. our elizabeth palmer is in tehran. she spoke with iran's foreign affairs minister mohammed javad zarif. what did he say? >> reporter: he restated iran's position and that is that if the u.s.'s main concern with iran is its nuclear program, then sanctions have just made it worse. >> i believe sanctions have failed. they failed because when sanctions started, iran had less than 200 centrifuges. now it has 19,000. so a simple calculation will show that sanctions have not produced the results that they were designed to produce. >> reporter: now the united states would argue that those sanctions have produced enough economic pressure on iran that it finally came to the negotiating table

chris lawrence has the story. >> reporter: john walked out of court wednesday a man who took being lazying to jail after swindling the government out of nearly $1 million. >> how does this occur in modern day society with managers trying to make ends meet. >> reporter: he was a specialist at the environmental protech agency making $164,000 a year. he rarely came to work and filed thousands of dollars in fake travel claims. his bosses didn't question his absence because he said he was working for the cia. for ten years, epa officials believed he was at cia headquarters or a secret mission overseas. he claimed he had to go to pakistan to help a fellow agent in trouble. he was actually here, hanging out at his home in the d.c. suburbs or hiding in plain sight at his vacation home in scenic, cape cod. in 2008 he didn't show up for six months. nobody batted an eye. >> what are you doing for the cia. the managers should be asking for some kind of proof. >> no one checked his story, even after he took five trips to california and billed the government $57,000 claiming the flights were for quot

and it's just such an honor really for me to represent politics & prose on this panel with chris and mitch and john who i hope you have figured out if you didn't know already are really titans of the book and bookselling industry each in their own way. each of them has such an incredible influence on so many positive things that are happening in the bookselling world. it's, you know, i could go be on and on just talking about them, and i should also say that because i'm sitting next to mitch who is a bookseller, of course, i really should just stop now, and you should just listen to him because he knows a thousand times more than all of us put together about bookselling. he is, among other things, the king of books. as i'm sure you've all heard of the miami book fair which we did a panel on today. it is the biggest fair besided the national -- that's what they say, but he never -- doesn't tell the truth. so i'm sure it is. and he runs some amazingly beautiful stores in miami. if you ever have a chance to visit books and books, any of their stores in miami or south beach or bell harbor, you must go.

chris. that's the way they make everything into bunker hill. in any sane universe, johnoehner is a conservative. yet they're not purely conservative enough for some on the far right. and certainly not conservative enough for those far right pressure groups that are raising money in these fights and taking care of their own interests rather than the larger interests of the party. and, you know, i think michael is absolutely right. if boehner can pull this off, he does give republicans more maneuvering room. and actually that's what my column is about for tomorrow. it says that if boehner pulls this off, it puts democrats on notice, frankly, that they need to up their game. they've been able to just kind of coast in terms of policy because look what the alternative was. it was crazy. right? and so, you know, status quo beats crazy. but if republicans are actually going to get back in the game, in the policy game then democrats are going to have to come up with some fresher sounding and looking ideas than they have, frankly, recently. >> michael, this is really wonderful ac
