i'm chris lawrence.oday we're going to be diving into the topic of ending violence in black lives matter. with me here today is dr. stephanie myers. she is the cofounder and national co-chair of black women for positive change. you'll hear about that organization. and also, kristin henning. and pastor william lamar, pastor at eme church. pastor, some say we've got this epidemic of violence. do we? and is that the correct term for it? >> chris, thanks for the opportunity to share on these difficult, seemingly intractable issues. i was at a meeting at the brookings institution earlier in the week. and they are asking similar questions. i think that we in america journalistically and historically pick up on this story in the middle. if you pick up on the story in the middle, what it appears is that black people are on theo logically, intellectually deficient, and some people say even prone to violence. in order to really deal with this, we have to deal with the policies and political and economic realities

. >> chris lawrence, she was found shot in a car rammed into a birding. now they say she was murdered. the car she was driving slammed into an apartment complex last saturday night. when police got there, they discovered she'd been shot likely before the crash. now they say it was a homicide. they're offering a $25,000 award for information that leads to the arrest. >>> a developing story in the texas town that was home to sandra bland. she's the inmate found dead in her jail cell last july. now, one of the officers involved in her arrest is under fire tonight for her role in tasing a young black city council member. tonight bland's family is here in washington hoping to join a national conversation about race. sh shomari stone has more. >> reporter: she's heart broken over her story. she plans to come out and describe her story, what she describes as police brutality. thousands are expected to come to this rally. >> it's kind of unexplainable. >> she still grieves over the death of her daughter sandra bland. her mother told me why she's here in washingto

chris lawrence is in the newsroom with more on that story and new reaction tonight. chris? >> jim, it's still unclear how james mcbride died, but just about everyone who went to his funeral today in prince george's county agrees this whole thing was just tragic. mcbride was a patient in medstar washington hospital earlier this month. hospital officials say he left the hosal withouteing formally discharged and died during a confrontation with two security grd whiy guards who tr restrain him. friends were solemn and shared their thoughts. >> it is tragic that it happened to such a great man. unfortunately, the family has to not only deal with this loss, but the tragedy of the loss. >>> oh, he will be missed. he will be missed very deeply, verydeeply. >> he was 74 years old and the security guards that worked for the hospital have been policed on administrative leave while d.c. police are invest getting this case. the hospital is conducting its own internal investigation, as well and so far no charges have been filed. wendy? >> chris lawrence. we are learning more about the de

news 4's chris lawrence is here now with new information from roseburg, oregon. chris? >> wendy, any minute now officials will hold a news conference and release the names of those nine victims, but we are already getting a better picture of the shooter who apparently demanded to know his victim's religions before he opened fire. this shooting happened at umpqua community college in southern oregon about 180 miles away from portland. this afternoon investigators revealed they found 13 weapons in all, some of them at the scene and some of them in christopher mercer's apartment. they also recovered a flak jacket with steel plates and magazines. seven of those weapons, at least seven had been purchased by mercer or his family members. he spent one month in the army at fort jackson, but discharged him for failing to meet administrative standards. speaking this afternoon, oregon's governor says it's time for the community to come together. >> one person's deranged act may have indeed broken all of our hearts, but he cannot prevent our hearts from growing back bigger and stro

our chris lawrence is in our newsroom with developments there. >> this might have come down to a drug deal gone bad and over the weekend police arrested two men for killing darren mcclose. a judge ordered earl bennett to be held without bond and the other suspect was picked up in d.c. and shan techs, gladden is awaiting extradition to montgomery county. he was shot in the brigs cheney area of silver spring. the suspects told mcly to meet them in edgewood park for a drug deal and that's where they robbed and killed him. today his mother described him as a kind, gentle person and he's asking for help in prosecuting the suspect. >> garrett would vold untear at homeless shelters and he was a kind hearted person. i want to know anybody who knows garet and anybody who saw something and we know there are people out here who witnessed this and they know what happened. we need them to please, come forward to the police and tell them what they saw. wye need this. we need justice for garrett. >> reporter: again, the two suspects have been charged with armed robbery and first-degree murder. doree

i'm chris lawrence at the live desk and we're now hearing from the people onboard a plane that caught fire on the runway in florida. by now you've seen the video of the dynamic airways flight and it was taxiing down the runway when an engine caught fire. we saw smoke coming out of a plane in fort lauderdale international airport. the paramedics took 15 people to the hospital. one of them was burned and the others had some bumps, bruiser and sprains. there was another pilot there who saw the dynamic airways plane leaking fuel and some of the passengers onboard when it started smoking. >> dynamic out of the left engine looks like it's leaking. >> there was, like, smoke all over the place so we got out and started running through the grass as far away from the airplane as possible. >> obviously, what goes through your mind is -- i mean, is this going to consume in two seconds or not? >> those were the passengers there. scary moments. the faa suspects a fuel leak led to this fire. the ntsb has already dispatched a team from washington to help figure it out. that airport does have one runw

chris lawrence is at the live desk with some new reaction. chris? >> yeah, pat. vermont's governor is calling this a freak of nature and passengers say they can feel something hitting the train before, quote, all hell broke loose. one locomotive and one passenger car wound up going off the tracks and over an embankment. the train had about 98 people onboard and seven of them were hurt including one person who had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital. the other his neck, back and shoulder pain. one passenger says he found the train conductor looked like he was in shock. >> i threw him on my back and he held on to my neck like this, and i just told him to hold on and just balance yourself, like, just stay in line so i can get us out of here. >> this happened on a line that runs out of vermont and it cuts through massachusetts and new york and heads down here to d.c. federal records show the railway that operates that stretch of tracks has had 54 accidents in the past nine years. they say four of those accidents on the new england central railroad involved debris be

chris lawrence is in our newsroom now with word on some clues that investigators are now starting to gather. chris? >> reporter: yeah, wendy. this is new. the woman who survived that blaze is awake and she's talking to investigators who are trying to figure out how this fire started. we know four animals died in this fire in reston. it started just before 7:00 in the morning at a home on purple sage court in reston. firefighters sea when thay when there the flames were shooting out of a first-floor window. a man who lives down the street took this video. he was watching as firefighters were able to rescue a couple from the top floor. >> slid them down the ladder, got them on a stretcher and they put them in an ambulance, took them over to reston hospital. >> reporter: the couple is now being treated at the washington hospital center. the man is in guarded but what's being termed stable condition. we just told you his wife has now woken up. she's talking to investigators. fire officials are going to hold a news conference in the next hour to update this story. we're going to bring you
