[applause] ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >>> good afternoon, steve mcdonald. chrisave been friends since we pledged the fraternity at uc berkeley in 1978. i want to first thank chris's family for allowing me the honor of speaking today as we celebrate chris's amazing life. i look at this crowd. i try to figure out how much he achieved so much while making personal and professional connections and lifelong friends all over the world. this beautiful light-filled rotunda is the perfect seting to celebrate chris's life. he was a true renaissance man and offered a lesson in modern day enlightenment to all he met. some say don't sweat the small stuff. chris was successful because he did pay attention to little details and common courtesis that showed the world that he cared. i think the roots of chris's enlightening character were evident when we were undergrads at cal. i would like to share examples. first of all we will start superficially on the topic of fashion. chris like many of our pledge class was from piedmont. i recall thinking what is up with piedmont. the khak

[cheers and applause] i remember, governor, back in 2009 when governor mcdonald and i would be tarling car or bus, and every now and then we would dial up a guy we heard was running in new jersey named chris christie. there was a buzz going around saying this guy might actually get elected in new jersey. [laughter] you probably don't remember this call, but i remember we called governor christie a couple of days before the election and said how are things looking in new jersey. he said we are going to win, and he talked about all the reasons why. we got off that phone, and we said if chris christie can win in new jersey, bob mcdonald and bill bolling can win in virginia, and it will send a good message, and it did. and governor christie has done a wonderful job over the last three years leading the state of new jersey. this is a guy that inherited a $10 million budget shortfall. he balanced the budget the old- fashioned way. he cut spending and grew the economy. he has become an outspoken respected statesman and spokesman for our conservative republican values. we are honored that he w

thing some have noted is governor romney made a couple of phone calms to virginia governor bob mcdonald and chrishristie, two republican governors negating to call governors who are democrats overseeing tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people who could be impacted. was that a bad quote-unquote call no pun intended to make, chip? >> no, i don't think so. everybody is on the same page here. this storm is historic, and we don't know exactly. there's no precedent to this. the president set the right tone in his conference. i think governor romney called the two republican governors that he knew and he's friends with. he's been through it before but on a smaller level in massachusetts when he was governor. it's important for them to get out. i don't think it's a bad political call. the only thing you can do bad over the next seven days is be too political on this. that's the real question. >> let me quickly say because i know keith wants to get in on this. you call your friends. your friends are the american people, not just those with republican governors with all due respect? >> i

[ laughter ] >> what do you think about romney saying he is canceling all events but he is holding one today. >> yeah try writing a check from his super pac or his own wallet and showing his commitment to this. show up at a red cross station and roll up your sleeves and not just wash dishes that are already clean -- [ laughter ] >> but i -- i don't think any of those optics are -- are anywhere near as effective as watching the president come out yesterday, talk to the country and then answer only one question. how do you think this will effect the election mr. president, i'm not worried about the election. i am concerned about saving lives. >> that was the most reassuring thing he could ever say. >> absolutely. and that was off the cuff unscripted, that is what -- if anything is going to tip this the only thing i am concerned about now is what this does for the get out the vote operation. so far we are ahead by 14 15 points in florida. early voting is very
