and joining me now to discuss this is chris phillips, the former head of the national counter terrorismurity office. chris, always a delight to have you on the show. i find this story simply , i find this story simply, astonishingly baseless. allegation. the inference that this may extend to nigel farage dragged into the web once again of vladimir putin. russian influence and allegations have been thrown at nigel farage time and time again, with no proof thus far. tell me, what do you think about this astonishing attack? >> well, i think it's a load of rubbish, to be honest, martin, i think it's probably the mail trying to get some headlines. christopher steele probably asked for a comment on all this, and, probably offhand mentioned something along these lines that people will be looked into, and i think it's a story of nothing, martin, to be quite honest, tommy robinson will be monitored. there's no doubt about that. he's considered a bit of a problem. and criminal to some, but, nigel's not said anything. i don't think that , anything. i don't think that, would would cause any issues

. >> let's talk to former head of counterterrorism chris phillips , counterterrorism chris phillips,you. we've been debating, actually, in the last hour as to whether this is the right thing to do, to say , islamic state have to say, islamic state have claimed some sort of responsibility, and that the local police are calling it an act of terrorism. is that productive? and is that actually probably the right thing to do to face up to the fact that this was, an attack carried out by a muslim who was obviously radicalised in some way against christians ? christians? >> yeah. well, i mean, it was clearly, that it's down to the motive, really, for the attackers to whether it's terrorism or not. and clearly that seems to be obvious to to, the authorities. to some extent. it's it's good that as much information is released as possible, because i think if you have a if you have that gap, then, of course other people can can fill it, especially on social media. but, but of course the islamic state can claim anything they like. really. i mean, it's the most likely this is a person that, that

chris, lovely to see you.thank phillips, chris, lovely to see you. you've seen over the weekend, the police reaction to it, the government reaction to it? are they saying the things that people out there want to hear? >> well, i mean , you've just >> well, i mean, you've just summed it up very well. >> as far as i can see it, this is very similar to the brexit situation where the most of the population didn't want, didn't want to be closer , closer, want to be closer, closer, unked want to be closer, closer, linked with europe and the politicians just didn't listen. >> they weren't listening no matter who was in power, it didn't really make any difference, >> and then the, the, the people had their vote, and i think, that's very similar with this. >> i think many , many people. >> i think many, many people. and to label them all far right is crazy. have this opinion that there are problems in our city centres too with many, illegal immigrants and too much immigration. >> but i think from the policing perspective there, you know, the police are right.

get more reaction now from the former head of the national counter terrorism security office, chris phillipsis, this is being treated clearly very seriously by the government. what sort of threat is there from groups that don't seem to actually be particularly organised? >> yeah, and i think that's the key for the government. the government want to talk tough on preventing these things from happening, really by dissuading people from doing it. but as we know, the country at the moment is a bit of a tinderbox. they see they see policing's, of incidents different from one community to the next. and people are annoyed about that. and, i think they're very concerned about a summer of rioting. i mean, i've been through a number of summers where i've had to don the helmet and deal with that kind of stuff, and it's awful . and stuff, and it's awful. and cities are really impacted by that. cities are really impacted by that . but the new measures that. but the new measures i think mark mentioned, they're the new measures aren't really anything new. it's just, just reiterating what's already there .

joining us now to discuss this is former head of the national counter terrorism security office, chris phillipsot that seemingly has been foiled by the austrian authorities ? by the austrian authorities? >> well, yeah, it's been foiled by the austrian authorities, but it appears that the intelligence has come from outside. so possibly or probably us or the us or through the five eyes. i would imagine, it, it does appear that these two were claiming to be part of isis, and that, by the looks of it, they were making precursor chemicals in order to make a bomb. the, the i think the issue is vienna and austria aren't overly experienced at dealing with terrorism . possibly, taylor terrorism. possibly, taylor swift's management team as well, a little bit concerned with the pubuchy a little bit concerned with the publicity , etc. after the publicity, etc. after the southport incident , murders, publicity, etc. after the southport incident, murders, and i think they've cancelled , i think they've cancelled, which, is, you know, we wouldn't necessarily want people to do that because we've got to carry o
