chris pollone with what to expect tonight. chris it is setting up to be an : unseasonably warm new year's eve in new york city, and about a million or so people are expected to crowd into the times square area to watch the ball drop to usher in 2016 later on today. 6000 police officers will also be in this area trying to make sure this event goes off without a hitch. the mayor of new york, bill deblasio, said this will be an unprecedented level of security. that this might be the most secure spot in the united states be 500 members of a special anti-terrorism task force that has been created over the years. they'll be armed with long guns and wearing body armor. they'll be watching 14 check points, where people will actually be coming into the times square area. once those people come in, they'll be checked with metal detectors, and they will not be able to leave once they are in the times square area. police will also be using bomb sniffing dogs and radiation detectors. they'll be monitoring a thousand cameras. all to make sur

nbc's chris pollone with more on the sep bracing. good morning to you. >> it's an unseasonably warm new york today. they're expect as many as a million spectators to start packing into times square over the next essentially hours and 6,000 nypd police officers will also be out here to make sure things go off without a hitch. the nypd has said they've been preparing for this for many months. obviously this is the premier event in new york city every single year. to that end they've added a terrorism unit as part of a group of 1,000 police officers who will be in times square. when spectators come out, they'll find a highly controlled area with areas penned off with police barricades. once people come in, they'll be checked with a metal detector, radiation detector, and bomb sniffing dogs as well. once people enter this cordoned off area, they'll not be allowed to leave. maybe as many as a million people could be in times square for the big ball drop tonight. yesterday we got a chance to take a look at that crystal ball that will drop

chris pollone, nbc news. this december is the deadliest from tornadoes on record in the state of texas. a columbia quadriplegic is getting a helping hand after someone stole his van on christmas eve. our billie jean shaw was there moment. robert mccurdy says he is excited to finally be able to leave his home, he says he's been stuck inside since christmas after discovering his van was stolen. today, achieve mobility, a wheelchair accessible van company donated a van to robert and debbie mccurdy for a couple of days. the company lent the couple the learning theirs was stolen christmas eve. a police incident report shows the the 2012 honda civic oddsey van was taken from in front of their home on geiger street around midnight on thursday. mccurdy who is quadriplegic says the van was specifically tailored to transport someone in a wheelchair. i asked him how it felt to receive the donation. "good, good. i'm actually very pleased, very gracious that they've done this for me." the mccurdys will have the van until
