nbc's chris sanchez takes a look at why that gap still exists. >> when young people first enter the workforcetheir paychecks will look about the same for the same job. but as time goes on, men's paychecks will go up much more quickly. last year that difference meant that women earned 16 cents per dollar less than male counterparts doing the same job. the chair of shoon say state's economic department says there is one very big reason -- biology. that women spend less time working and, thus, less time building up their salaries. >> when you are in the labor force continuously, you are earning skills, you are showing longevity. and women if you look at labor force participation rates, still leave the workforce more often than men. not for as long a period of time as it used to be, but more so than men. and that accounts for some of the discrepancy. >> reporter: ortega says the fields women choose also account for part of the difference. like teaching, which doesn't pay overtime. or retail where, as the candidate pool grows, the salaries drop. even consumer preference as in professional sports.
