chris dodd. >> thank you very much. >>> nbc's anne thompson is at the kennedy library in boston. anne, thank you. it seems to me the ritual is following is a bit behind schedule. the past president of bc is up there to preside, right? >> he is and he's joined by father donald mcmillan. both priests have been very close to the kennedy family through the years. they are at this hour saying a prayer inside the kennedy library. when the senator's body was brought into the library, he went through a column of about 100 current and former staffers, chris, and, you know, in recent days talking to some of those staffers and people who know the senator, they said if you were on kennedy's staff, you really never left. it was -- these weren't people who just worked for ted kennedy, but they loved ted kennedy, and they have come here to pay their respects today, and some of them will be sitting vigil. there's going to be a military guard over four members of the armed services and then four civilians who will stand vigil as the public comes through tonight, and many of those civilians will b

thompson's in hyannis port. norah o'donnell's with us. chris matthews is here. and presidential historian douglas brinkley has been on the phone for some time. douglas, get your impressions and then go to chris. doug, what are your thoughts this morning? >> just from listening to mike barnicle he talked about the personal very well. i add to that the fact having dogs with him and playing chasm all the time and going to see ted kennedy you always felt like you were going to see a kind of person who was so nice to young people, people upwards in their careers or had questions. i'm impressed historically about the senate office. it became during the 1960s and '70s protest period in washington, d.c., kind of the place if you got tear gassed, he'd go to his office to get water and recoup. he had a high tolerance for dissent and allowing people, particularly that were protesting vietnam, veterans back from vietnam that had a beef with the way the war was going, to actually use his office as a living room at times. he did it so much it would frighten guards that were g

chris matthews, thanks for being with us. i know you have to go. let's go to anne thompson. anne, we are at the top of the hour. president obama was going to give a speech at 8:30, a press conference talking about the life and legacy of ted kennedy. it's been pushed back. what is the latest? >> reporter: we understand president obama will address reporters about 9:30 this morning. we do not know what the delay is. i can tell you here, at hyannisport we have seen a priest go into the kennedy compound. we could see someone walking one of senator kennedy's portuguese water dogs by the ocean. he loved those dogs. they were very, very dear to him. he passed away late last night according to a family statement issued at 1:30 this morning. in the statement, the family spoke of the irreplaceable man, the center of their lives, who fought for justice, they were so proud of him. he was so optimistic. it's hard to believe he will no longer be here. in may of 2008, senator kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. he traveled to duke university where part of the tumor was removed. he came back, received chemother
