congressman chris van hollen joins us. nice to see you. 18 months have gone by since the first discussion about the fiscal cliff back in july and august of 2011. has anything profoundly changed that both sides will work out a solution? >> there are two things that changed. one over the last couple of years whether you like it or not there were lots of republicans in congress that were really focused on defeating president obama. some of they will said that was their major goal. that didn't happen. now, we need to move on. hopefully there will be more cooperation. president says he wants to cooperate. speaker boehner has set the right tone. the other major thing has changed is structure. we have an action changing event. fiscal cliff, it carries great risks but also creates great opportunities. >> one of the issues that the republicans don't like is raising the taxes on wealthier people in this country. i think president obama has set it at $250,000. according to calculations that in the event that happens, that will raise

let's get right to our next guest, chris van hollen. nice talking to you. >> good morning, soledad. >> let's talk about the escalation in out and out fighting now between israel and the palestinian militants. there are now 100 terror sites, apparently, according to israel, that they are attacking, in response to rocket attacks that have come from the palestinians. what is your take on what's happening here right now and how likely it is that this will escalate into a full-scale ground war? >> well, hamas continues to rain rocket attacks into israel. israel, of course, as the right to defend itself. hamas has dedicated itself to the destruction of israel. they've never been willing to recognize the existence of the state of israel. so israel's taking actions, defensive actions, in this case, against the hamas military leader, to put an end to the strikes against israel. so this is a matter of israel exercising its right to self-defense. >> the president's in new york today. tomorrow, he's going to start those initial sort of face-to-face

joining me now is chris van hollen, democrat from maryland. the democratic leadership meeting with secretary geithner this meeting. congressman, thank you for your time tonight. >> reverend, good to be with you. >> congressman, you were in the meeting on the hill today. the white house wants $1.6 trillion in tax increase, 50 billion in economic stimulus and new power for the president to raise the debt limit without congressional approval. what can you tell us about that? >> well, first of all, secretary geithner on behalf of the president had two meetings on the house side. one with the republican leaders and one with democratic leaders. you're right, secretary geithner laid out key provisions. many of these are in the president's budget. if the republicans look carefully at the budget, it has called for a jobs plan that includes $50 billion of investment and that's part of a plan that would also immediately extend tax cuts to 98% of the people. the president has said we need $1.6 trillion in revenue as part of a long-term deficit reduction.

joining me now, chris van hollen and also a member of the house budget committee, congressman, good morning to you, sir. >> good morning, craig. great to be with you. >> the national journal reporting that the president could hold events related to the cliff this week. what are you hearing? >> well, i think that's right. i don't think anything has been settled. there have been on going conversations, but obviously the discussion will heat up this week now that the thanksgiving is behind us. >> what does the white house hope to accomplish with these types of events? >> well, look, this was not a side issue in the campaign. throughout the last presidential campaign the president made very clear that his number one focus was jobs and the economy and also having a long-term plan to reduce the deficit in a balanced way and that means in addition to cuts you would also have revenue, revenue that you get by asking higher income earners to pay a little bit more to reduce the deficit and so the president was really clear in the campaign and i think it is really important that he take that discussion

i think chris van hollen made interesting points.here's no question that the problem on taxes and the fichlt scal cliff lives in congress, in the house of representatives and largely with republicans. as we were traveling around the country, people do not hold democrats in congress blameless for this. they have to go in and say it is a new day now. we all talked smack for the last two years. americans want a deal. more people will get thrown out if they don't get a deal. hard liners have been pushed out but a deal has to be made. >> next 30 seconds, talk to me about new york futures. >> slipping right now. we'll watch closely. >> what does that mean? >> they're falling a little bit. there's a little less optimism about the status quo and looking for sign that is fiscal cliff is happening. you can't start changing jobs and the structure of the economy if you have this crazy malpractice hanging over your head, which is what the f sichlt fiscal cliff is. >> one issue barely touched on in this campaign, home foreclosure. significant issu

let me bring in former democratic congressional chairman congressman chris van hollen. joining us. i know you have a lot going on. let me get your feeling right now at this hour. >> there are long lines for votes all around the country, including my home state of maryland. we're hearing the same thing around the country. i feel good with respect to the president's election. as you indicated, it's going to come down to the fewle battleground states, but the president has an edge in states like ohio and we detected a note of desperation from the romney campaign when they started to run these very deceptive ads with respect to to the auto industry that were so bad that even general motors and chrysler had to come out and call them on the carpet. that was clear a a sign of desperation from the romney campaign. >> let me ask you what could concern you at this point. we have a couple questions out there. can an incumbent president win when the unemployment rate below 8% or has his economic message worked? they throw out the auto bailout and the impact in ohio. what gives you

. >> stand by, i want to bring in chris van hollen. good to see you. >> great to see you. >> from what you're hearing, are you close to a deal? >> we're not close to a deal. everyone's continuing to work very hard to get a deal. the president and secretary geithner reaching out to capitol hill as the president is reaching out to the country. >> let's talk about some of the numbers. politico reporting $1.2 trillion in tax increases. $400 billion in entitlement cuts. mostly from medicare. another $1.2 trillion in spending cuts and war savings. does that soiund like it's in te ballpark to you? >> i think it's too early to say what's in the ballpark. the overall question you're asking is how much will come from revenue, how much will come from cuts. there's been no agreement reached on that yet. and you have to fill in the details. >> let's talk about one of the things that is getting conversation today. if the republicans give on raising taxes, and we know that skr john boehner and a lot of republicans have said they don't want to raise t

chris van hollen doors is a deficit package modeled after the simpson-bowles plan. >> thank you. it is great to have you here. we have had people for the last 24 hours giving their opinions on the fiscal cliff and the fiscal cliff negotiations and what should happen. we are expecting you now to tell us exactly what is happening. >> listen, i think we all need to accomplish two things as we approach the fiscal cliff. one, do everything we can to avoid it both in terms of the sequester peace and also the tax peace. then create a structure where we can deal with the big issues, the big fiscal challenges over the next six to nine months. it will be very useful if we can least agree to a framework structure. one is to make sure we can accelerate in what has been a slow recovery. at the same time, act now to put our long term deficit on a sustainable downward path. act now on both. by now i mean first avoid the fiscal cliff, and then get into the next six-nine months in a structured way. >> several people have pointed out the democrats have the advantage in the fiscal cliff. is there a
