chris van hollen is our guest on c-span's newsmakers program. he is a leading democrat in the house of representatives. >> the president will be delivering his state of the union address this week. i think he will address those questions. we are so caught up in dealing with these short-term, self- imposed crises that is undermining our ability to come up with a long-term comprehensive planned. there are philosophical differences. our republican colleagues do not believe that there is any role for the government beyond providing for defense and funding the pentagon. that is the view of some. it is not the view of the great majority of the american people. i think the president will propose -- nobody knows what the president will say -- i think he will propose lots of ideas about how we can support them -- to spur innovation in this country. the government has had an important role in basic research. i mentioned the national institutes of health. you have other agencies, in the energy sector or other sectors, that can help provide seed money for t

the president has been very clear, chris van hollen has been clear, our caucus is clear. from here on out if you're going to do anything to address the deficit you have to approach it in a balanced fashion. balanced means that revenue continues to be part of the conversation. this is what coppingman van hollen has out -- congressman van hollen has put forward and what also has been put forward on the senate side. you can't with a straight face say to a headstart youngster, or to a special needs student that we're not going to look at revenue anymore. when you have a situation of the oil and gas industry that continues to get bills of dollars in subsidies, taxpayer money. what you're doing there is you're making a choice. on the one side, you have an industry that in 2011 made $137 billion in profits. that's more than the total value of the sequestration over a year's period. $137 billion. on one side of the equation. what we like to see is let's eliminate these subsidies because they don't need them anymore. on the other side, you have a poshte cut of 70,000 children from

chris van hollen. the chair: the gentleman from maryland is recognized. mr. van hollen: thank you, madam chairman. i thank my colleague, mr. schraderer, and his colleagues for offering this amendment. i support the overall framework of simpson-bowles. i said that many times. if you look at the balance in simpson-bowles between the cuts and the revenue, it's something i think that is the model that we should be using in this body. i do want to submit for the record an analysis done by the center for budget policy priorities that shows exactly what that breakdown would be. i don't -- the chair: covered under general rule. mr. van hollen: i don't support every single recommendation within simpson-bowles. i think we have an osama bin laden obligation to come up with an alternative cut. if he we don't like the revenue, we should come up with alternative revenues. with the simpson-bowles proposal it creates a framework saying we need to take a balanced approach to he reducing our deficit. i was listening to my friend, mr. price, explaining his opposition to this. h
