joining me now is maryland congressman, chris van hollen, ranking member on the house budget committeesequester really does have an impact and the furloughs are kicking in and we're feeling it at the airports. what can be done? >> well, it does, andrea, these sequester cuts, deep and immediate, across-the-board cuts were bound to have an impact. it was never going to be the fact that the sky was going to fall the day after the sequester took place. but what we're seeing now and will continue to see is the slow grind on the economy. disruption at places like airports and according to the nonpartisan congressional budget office, 750,000 fewer american jobs at the end of the year. how do we deal with it? we should replace the sequester with a more targeted, smart way to reduce the deficit over a longer period of time that accomplishes the same deficit reduction without hurting the economy. i've tried to offer that proposal for an up or down vote four times this year and have not even had the ability to get a vote on that, andrea. >> mitch mcconnell said today, this is all because of the p

>> chris van hollen? >> it does matter. there are some investments that provide a greater return in terms of our future. i would argue infrastructure ve, investment in education is important, science and research at the early stage is very important. we also know that in this period where you have all this slack, you have trillions of dollars on the sidelines primarily because the lack of demand moving forward and making these disasters now and help the economy in the short term and the long term. i should say that i do believe we should also act now to put in place balanced approach for long-term deficit reduction. i am not saying wait to do that but it should be phased in over a longer period of time. most of the real demographic push comes eight, nine, ten years out. it pays to face those changes in on the health care side that we talked about, but it is very shortsighted to cut deeply in individual investors. a drag on the economy and hurts the long-term economic growth. >> there is plenty of savings, we are short on ti
