chris van hollen of maryland joins me right now.our reaction to john boehner and the cuts they want to make. do you agree with where they are going? >> absolutely not. you remember right after the november election thomas, you heard speaker boehner and the republican leader in the senate mitch mcconnell say they were going to really focus on the middle class squeeze, the fact that american workers were working harder than ever but falling behind. if you look at this budget it was just words. they were just kidding. because what this budget does is further put the squeeze on working people hard working americans. it's going to make it harder to afford a college education. it's going to increase the tax burden on middle income families while providing another round of windfall tax breaks to folks at the very very top as well as special interests. so this is a budget that's great. if you're already in the 1% but for everybody else and everything else in the country, it's a loser. >> is there anywhere in there congressman where you see

hahn: i thank my colleague, chris van hollen, for the opportunity to speak today. i think a budget is a reflection of our priorities. the choices we make about how to invest and spend have an impact on our american families. we must make it easier for hard-working americans to own a home, to send their kids to college and have a secure and enjoyable retirement. that's why it's so important that we invest in our nation's ports, which create good-paying american jobs and sustain american businesses. providing our ports and waterways with the funding and support they need is a high priority for me and one that's shared by many of my colleagues especially the almost 100 members of the bipartisan congressional ports caucus. we know that america must invest more in our ports to remain globally competitive and prepare for the expansion of the panama canal which will impact international trade and shipping routes. the budget we are considering today, however, does just the opposite. cutting funding for programs that support american commerce is both shortsided and harmful
