gldz members of maryland's democrat party are lining up his chris value hollen. >> delia goncalves -- chris vanlen. >> delia goncalves joins us with more. >> reporter: first it was montgomery county ike leggett and now prince george's county executive rushern baker will throw his support behind chris van hollen for u.s. senate. ipts' no surprise it will happen -- it's no surprise it will happen here at this community center because chris van hollen of montgomery county secured the money to build this community center in colmar manor back in 2008. what is significant is rushern baker is not endorsing the hometown candidate donna edwards. some say they have had a strained relationship over the years. but rushern baker and chris van hollen have known each other for decades. they worked together in fact in the maryland general assembly in the '90s. a montgomery county democrat tells "the baltimore sun" that he and baker, quote, stood side by side at the statehouse fighting for better schools and stronger gun laws and we continue to fight hard for critical investments for prince george's county. now

congressman chris van hollen has won the endorsement of rushern baker in his bid for the u.s. senate. van hollen is running in the democratic primary to succeed the senator barbara mikulski. she's retiring after 40 years in congress. baker said he's known van hollen for decades and trusts his judgment and leadership. >> i'm endorsing a person that understands prince george's county. maureen: congresswoman donna edwards is the only other declared candidate in the democratic primary. other members of maryland's congressional delegation are also considering senate bids. a teachers union in maryland is urging lawmakers to reject a tax credit. the proposed credit backed by governor hogan would help businesses that support private school students. the president of the maryland senate -- rather the maryland state education association calls the break a vulture scheme. hogan initially pulled back on money for education and state employee pay to address a budget deficit. fairfax county residents got their first chance to comment on school funding at a public hearing today. supervisors

what did because of have put forward in their alternative and the house, chris van hollen and many senateemocrats, trying to bring down the sequester equally. when talking about whether you reduce the sequester on the defense side it hardly makes sense from a budgetary perspective. one typical republican with tax and spend policies, spending money they do not have, and on this case on defense. we need to find cuts per that is really not what the discussion is about. it is, do we go above and beyond this cap on the defense side? if you're looking at doing it equally saying, look, we are going to undo part of the sequester and find alternative cuts -- as far as i know, that is not the discussion occurring. host: as far as alternative cuts, what programs could possibly make the cut, so to speak? guest: i have offered dozens of cuts and amendment spirits of half past he has two different forms. whether it is cutting ag subsidies or defense programs that even the pentagon says they do not need or whether it is removing budgetary tricks that we use, i think there is ample room thomas certainly

my colleague, chris van hollen, has a solution for this. requiring companies to raise wages for their workers if they want to qualify for that tax break. it's a simple solution that wouldn't mean companies certainly have to raise pay for their workers. they'll just need to stop expecting the government to cover the exorbitant salaries of their executives if they can't pay the rest of their employees a livable wage. mr. speaker, my colleagues and i stand with the millions of workers fighting for $15. lifting pay for low-wage workers will boost their purchasing power pumping more money into our economy and giving businesses the revenue to create more jobs. lifting pay for low-wage workers will reduce government spending. lifting pay for low-wage workers will open the doors to the american dreams for the millions who have already demonstrated that they are ready and willing to work and to work hard for it. and by standing together and fighting for the $15, these workers have already made their voices heard. in the living rooms and the board ro
