fox sunday anchor chris wallace joins us from washington. elated happy new year to you, mr. smith. >> it's cold there. and i guess, i don't know, temperatures on the hill seem to be getting kind of hot. how's things going? >> well, look, the economy is the big issue. as big as terror is and people are certainly concerned about that, all the public opinion polls show that the economy is the big issue. and, you know, winston churchill said there are lies, dam lies and statistics. and you can spin the economic situation any way you want. what republicans are saying the niths analysts said we lost ten times as many as we thought. the white house is saying we lost ten times more jobs in the first quarter of 2009 than we did in the last quarter. so, you know, things are getting much better. the job loss pace is moderating so it can be spun any way. but when you've got double digit unemployment and two, almost three million people who have lost their jobs since the economic stimulus went into effect, it's a tough, tough burden for the democrats to c

chris wallace joins with us a preview. >> reporter: good morning, melanie. >> chris, these extremistreats from yemen aren't really a surprise. there's been this history going back to the u.s.s. cole bombing. should we have known this was coming? >> reporter: well, that's exactly the question that people are asking. and it's one thing to say that there was an al-qaida presence in yemen. it's another thing to say that they had the training and the capability to launch this christmas day would-be bombing of a u.s. airliner. at the top of the hour, we are going to be talking to john brennan who is the president's top white house advisor on homeland security and counterterrorism. i will tell you we pre taped it, and it is a chilling interview. it's about the significance, the strength of al-qaeda in yemen, the fact that they closed the u.s. embassy because he said there was a very credible threat that al-qaida was going to try to attack our embassy there. he also talks about the very credible possibility there may be more abdul mutalab's, more of these young would-be terrorists who are go

chris wallace is the anchor of fox news sunday. hey, chris. good aftechris.>> good afternoo.ulling the focus back to the economy and back to jobs, right? >> absolutely. you have the new jobs figures for december that came out today indicating that unemployment stayed at 10%. in fact there had been an expectation only 8,000 jobs would be lost and 85,000 were loss. it continues to indicate we have severe economic problems. though the loss of jobs is moderating a little bit. in addition the president has his own political issue. democrats facial elections in 2010 are very concerned because they think according to all the polls that the public is concerned, primarily concerned about the economy and jobs. i think you will see a pivot from the president starting really with his speech coming up in a few minutes to jobs and the economy to try to indicate that that is job one for this president and for the democratic party. it's obviously a central strike against them as they face the electorate in 2010. trace: i wanted to bring up if i could. 85,000 jobs. there is a wide swath of am
