the weather channel's chris warren has been following it for us. chris, good evening. >> reporter: good evening. we have a big storm working through the middle part of the country. out ahead of it, some very, very mild air. take a look at this. we are going to see tomorrow 60s and 70s. take a look at st. louis. 65 degrees, that is 27 degrees warmer than average. okay, so st. louis is 65 tomorrow. omaha, 25. 40 degrees cooler. that is a strong cold front working through the country. cold front separates relatively warmer air from relatively cooler air. out ahead of it, we are going to have some big-time storms firing up. anywhere you see red, this is where we're going to see strong storms, possibly isolated tornadoes, some large hail and gusty wind. to the north, the dakotas, parts of nebraska into parts of western minnesota, we could see some very heavy snow and strong winds and possibly some blizzard conditions. that's for your friday. as we head into saturday, new year's day, this front will continue to progress farther and farther to the east. it

which is why we need weather channel meteorologist chris warren from atlanta tonight as we head into this weekend. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the latest is it looks like that we are going to catch a break on the east coast. there was two possible scenarios that we are looking and it looks like we are going to be seeing the best case scenario out of this low pressure from sunday into monday, with minor to moderate impact. a little snow in parts of new england. the alternative would have been much worse. now, the west looks like we're going to see major impacts potentially here as an area of low pressure spins a series of disturbances and california takes the brunt of this. take a look at this. snowfall totalling in the mountains in california, 6 to 15 feet. that's feet of snow. avalanche risk will be up there. strong winds, as well. and look at the rain. between now through midweek, brian, 6 to 12 inches of rain for the lower elevations. this brings the threat for flooding and mudslides. >> going to be an unbelievable weather event on the west coast. chris warren, thanks as al

chris warren joins me from atlanta.ook, we know this huge storm that has slammed the midwest is headed east. is something coming behind it as well? >> right now, the main concern is the cold. anything that comes next is not going to be significant as far as the cold temperatures and that storm. behind the storm, we're still dealing with lake effect snow. we have the ray darks the green, the yellows. at times, throughout parts of maine, this is heavy. you see this white, you have the flow coming off the lakes. it picks up that moisture and just dumps a lot of snow in confined areas. over the next couple of days, we're looking at possibly getting still, more than a foot, maybe more than a foot and a half. the snow is one side. the other side is the very cold temperatures. florida, this is your forecast for the overnight lows. even some teens for the south. >> unbelievable. chris warren with what has been a rough weather weekend turning into a rough weather week just one week before holiday week. >>> that's fit for me. i'm
