for more on all this let's turn to weather channel meteorologist chris warren. hi chris. >> hello to you, lester. severe weather the big threat and an ongoing threat right now. i want to show you where that threat is going to be through the evening and as we look at this know that already there have been several tornado warnings already some damage with trees down power outages. power lines down at least four mobile homes have been heavily damaged in parts of mississippi. to the northeast, there is a snow threat especially new england, looking around a foot of snow in some areas, and that very dangerous freezing rain will be an issue. expecting to see ice into the morning hours, black ice a big concern, could be power outages with this as well. then there are some big changes on the way for the northeast, sunday it will be wet. however, 65 in new york. almost 70 in washington d.c. that is well above average this time of year and then some major changes. we're looking at monday temperatures down just above freezing in many areas. inland areas will be into the 20s

joining me now is weather channel chris warren in providence, long island. chris, what can you tell us? report>> reporter: i can tell you it's getting worse. we're a few hours from providence, long island. this is an onramp to interstate 95. it has been slow going for most of the day. the northbound lanes is what we're looking at here. they have improved but southbound lanes with headlights coming at us that's remained slow several hours now. talk about the points i heard earlier when we were discussing this. the fact that some of these roads get treated and a few hours or minutes later they're covered with snow. that's what we saw here. they plowed through. it turned wet a while. it started snowing again. it's cookie dough consistency. bill was talking about getting more than three feet of snow. i marked one foot two foot and three feet here. we barely have anything on the ground and roads look like this. it piles up. they come and wipe it away. then it happens again. another six inches wipe it away. this is not the worst of it. the band of snow coming in bi

. >>> joining me now from providence rhode island, chris warren of the weather channel, and providence is on track to get hit pretty hard? >> reporter: for the past few hours, the snow has coming throughlike this. talking about the winds, things are going to be sfrel variable it's not a uniform snowfall. and you can see this right here. this is completely dry concrete. and i'm going to crawl over here, kind of knee my way over here. you're starting to see some snow and this is that wind drift, that the wind blowing the snow, maybe an inch right here. got a little bit closer now we're down if you can see this you're more like five inches right here and that's the way it's going to be it's not a uniform event. and also look at how light and fluffy this is. this is that whiteout conditions that you can get. once the snow is on to the ground, it's bad enough that's falling down heavy, but even when it's on the ground you get what's called the ground blizzard, the wind picks up the snow from the ground and blows it around. so we're still at the front end of this at providence rhode island y

i am meteorologist chris warren in providence rhode island back to you. >> thank you very much. we have pictures of the dramatic scene on new york's long island as suffolk county police sent out military grade humvees to help stranded drivers struggling to get home on long island expressway as heavy snow fell there. police happened on a driver who slid off the road. it took some time they eventually got him going again. that's a scary sight. heavy snow continues to fall on long island particularly in sufficient observing county at the east end of the island. snow more than two feet deep in some areas. winds continue to gust up to 50 miles per hour. and blizzard warning remains in effect. joining me live by phone, executive steve balown. that humvee one of the rescues taking place there. pretty rough conditions there for you guys. >> no question about it. we have been traveling on the long island expressway and we shoveled out a new york city police officer returning home from late night shift, and that's why we have been emphasizing to people the importance of staying off the ro

. >>> and let's good to chris warren. he is in providence rhode island. they are expecting possibly 30 inches of snow. what is it like there now? >> reporter: the wind is picking up and we have been watching the traffic pick up. so as the cars are slowly making their way on to interstate 95 northbound, we do hope they get home soon. because as 7:00 this evening, when the blizzard warning goes into effect, it is going to be 30 hours with that blizzard warning under effect. so if you don't get home and you are stuck, you are in big trouble. because as dominica was saying the visibility is way down and you'll have the snow and even if you get the snow letting up for a little while, the wind is still blowing so strong you still will have blizzard conditions potentially with the snow blowing across the ground. so as we look right now, can you see lights flashing from a triple-a vehicle so that is not a sign of what is happening and what is possibly building but we are seeing more and more cars on the roads and hopefully people will get home and already potenti

i want to go to chris warren in providence rhode island. looking like it will bear the brunt of it? >> yes, here all the way up to boston. you're looking at possibly two feet of snow. these bans as they set up cannot rule out three feet of snow in some cases. we have been seeing this snow come down harder and faster and we're seeing more and more snow building up on some of the side streets right here. we have seen a lot of tow trucks and plows out here. traffic is moving along pretty good right now. here in providence you cannot. i don't think we had an inch here yet. look at this corner. when the wind comes and blows, it picks up the know it is piling up here in the corner. the corner of the streets, you're starting to see more and more snow and you can see little areas where the plows have come through. they have been through here a few times. and then the snow comes up so fast is starts to get covered again. a plow might come through and two or three hours later it might come down at all, that's how fast it will come down tonight. >> we have daniel mckey on the phone right now,

weather channel, chris warren. how are things looking now? whoa! >> reporter: yeah, whoa is right, jose. dealing with more snow coming down right now. winds have not been as consistently strong as this morning. at times getting gusty conditions blowing the snow around. interstate 95 is below me in providence rhode island. side streets, off and on ramps are a mess. plows are coming through, but minutes later the snow comes back. this is all drift. they come through, plow it then the snow drifts back up. once the clouds come through it is minutes later before they have to come through again. more than 100 trucks are here. state department of transportation cruising around 95 as well but something else to note all these trucks these are utility trucks from south carolina in this parking lot. came up late last night. got the word sunday. some left monday morning at 3:00, 4:00 in the morning, getting here late last night. the story of the parking lot goes like this. it started yesterday, regular day, full of cars. 2:30, evening commute started. parking

the weather channel's chris warren is live in providence, rhode island. chris, how is it up there? >> reporter: well it is still windy and it is still snowing. good news is they are making progress. the crew, the snowplows have been working around the clock. people have for the most part stayed off the roads. the travel ban does come to an end at 10:00 so, those are signs that things are returning to normal. also buses will start operating again tomorrow morning. what people are dealing with here are the aftereffects here getting onto the street this is a look at what happens when all of this snow gets piled up. usually it's a sidewalk you can walk right onto. then we'll show you something else. you have now to deal with digging out because of the plow because the plows came through, may have buried parts of your car or blocked you in. then you have the wind-blown snow. i dug this out right here. and you can see with the wind it's just a couple inches right here and then the wind when it comes, it slows, the snow settles and then out here i measured it perpendicular from the grass

let's check in the weather channel's chris warren. >> thanks ari, this will be the coldest air of the winter season for millions of americans. just look at where this air is coming from? some of this air starting in the north pole. we follow these streams all the way down into the great lakes and the northeast, and then air is going to be hanging around for much of the week. temperatures for daytime highs in some areas barely getting above the freezing market. in fact not even going to make it there. very cold also in the northeast. highs in the teens. >>> today in boston, jury selection began in the trial of tsarnaev. that was on april 15th 2013 today the judge told the court opening statements will begin january 26th. jury selection is expected to be very long and painstaking. there's a vast pool 3,000 jurors from the boston area pulled together. that will have to be combed in order to just find 12 suitable individuals and six alternates. tsarnaev's attorney repeatedly argued that it some are also questioning the government's deciding to seek the death penalty quote -- he's going to

chris christie. all of course making indications that they could run. there is ben carson. meanwhile, on the democratic side, former secretary of state hillary clinton is still the overwhelming favorite. senator elizabeth warrenen? we have guy benson, political editor of town hall. ben, let me start with you. first, we got mitt, jeb, chris rand marco rick, ted, ben and mike, for mike huckabee. who has the inside track if any of them right now? >> well, that's a lot of names. first, i'm just sort of surprised, was it really only 20 debates in 2012 on the republican side? it felt like 1300. i feel like i was at all of them. so i'm glad that the rnc is trying to get a handle on that a little bit here and bring in a sense and a number of debates that would perhaps be less crazy, less of a circus atmosphere. i don't think you can really argue there's any sort of inside track this early on. i will say in terms of having name recognition and a group of people behind him with a lot of money and the early advantage of basically announcing first obviously jeb bush is formidable. but still, it's january 2015. we have a very long way to go before i will start calling any favorites in this one. >> you're right about the l

chris, who do you see as being the fire brands, people that people can get inspired over. >> you mean on the right or left? if you go to the left you have elizabeth warrenot of excitement with democrats. you look between focus group done last weekend in colorado in which you had democrats come out and were critical of hillary clinton as potential democratic nominee, and called for elizabeth warren type candidate. on the right, you have a lot of excitement created by rand paul was mentioned, ted cruz is bringing out a lot of excitement. and going back to the subject of mitt romney, i liken it to college football playoffs. you have a moderate conservative slot which romney would have to come out of that field, you have jeb bush and chris christie there. rand paul for libertarian, evangelical slot rick santorum mike huckabee and the tea party slash movement conservative slot which i think i believe in 2016 that excitement will come from that pocket. that's where you have ted cruz's of the world that every time they speak brings out excitement that gets republican voters energized. a movement you haven't seen with the nominees. >> nominees as fired up as la
