abc 7 news reporter chris winn explains. >> reporter: inside this palo alto home, marketing executive sharon wong is hard at work. >> i just want to make sure we're in good shape for our event on sunday. >> reporter: on this day her dining room transformed into a makeshift assembly line. she and her team of volunteers are behind a new charitable initiative called the shoebox project for shelters. they are asking for community members to donate small gifts up to $50 worth, everything from new scarves to socks, even perfume or shampoo, all packed inside a shoebox. donations are then given to domestic violence survivors living in nearby shelters. >> a lot of these women, they leave in a rush, they don't have time to pack anything that they own so they are basically with the clothes on their back, hoping to find help. >> reporter: the shelter in santa clara county is where some of the donations have gone. we spoke to ann lee, a legal advocate and domestic violence survivor herself. she says these shoeboxes can truly brighten up someone's life. >> we feel more confident being stronger, bei
